Chalatenango (; known as "Chalate" by locals) is a town and municipality in the Chalatenango department of El Salvador. It is the capital of the department. As of 1 May 2021, Alfredo Hernández of Nuevas Ideas (NI) is the municipality's mayor. It is divided administratively into 6 cantons and 36 '' caserios''. Sports Chalatenango is home to the professional football teams Alacranes Del Norte and A.D. Chalatenango. Chalatenango () is a department of El Salvador, located in the northwest of the country. The capital is the city of Chalatenango. The Chalatenango Department encompasses 2,017 km² and contains more than 204,000 inhabitants. ''Las Matras Archaeological Ruins'' contains the relics of prehistoric populations and caves in which rock writing is found. Nuevas Ideas (Spanish for ''New Ideas'') is a Salvadoran populist political party founded on 25 October 2017 and based in San Salvador. It was founded by the current President of the Republic of El Salvador, Nayib Bukele. It was legalized by the Supreme Electoral Court (TSE) on 24 August 2018. Jaripeo () refers to a form of bull riding practiced mainly in central and southern Mexico. It developed in the 16th century and originally involved riding fighting bulls to the death, but later evolved to where contestants attempt to ride bucking bulls until the animals tire and stopped bucking. Jaripeos traditionally take place in lienzo charros (another word by which it can be known is toriles) or bull rings, but can also take place in modern arenas.
