Christopher David Chafe, born 1952 in Bern, Switzerland, is a musician, scientist, and the director of the Stanford University Center for Computer Research in Music and Acoustics (CCRMA). He is Duca Family Professor at Stanford University, holding a Doctor of Musical Arts in music composition from Stanford University (1983), a Master of Arts in music composition from University of California, San Diego, and a Bachelor of Arts in music from Antioch College. He won a Net Challenge Prize from the IEEE and Association for Computing Machinery in 2000, and a National Science Foundation research award in 1999. Paul Chafe was born in Toronto, Ontario in 1965 and grew up in Hamilton, Ontario. He is a Canadian science fiction author who frequently publishes with Baen Books. Chafe was the son of John Chafe, a merchant of Exeter, Devon and his wife Anne May, daughter of William May of North Molton, Devon. His father died in 1619. Wallace Chafe (; September 3, 1927 – February 3, 2019) was an American linguist. He was Professor Emeritus and research professor at The University of California, Santa Barbara. Biography Chafe was born in Cambridge, Massachusetts. He was a student of Bernard Bloch and Floyd Lounsbury at Yale University, where he obtained his doctorate in 1958. From 1975 to 1986 he was the director of the Survey of California and Other Indian Languages at the University of California, Berkeley. He later moved to the University of California, Santa Barbara, and became professor emeritus at UCSB in 1991. Chafe was a cognitivist; he considered semantics to be a basic component of language.
