Cesare Mezzogori (Active 1660s-1689) was an Italian painter, active in a Baroque style. He was born in Comacchio, and likely trained as well as active in Ferrara. He often painted for the Theatine order. Baroque Art
The Baroque (, ; ) is a style of architecture, music, dance, painting, sculpture, poetry, and other arts that flourished in Europe from the early 17th century until the 1750s. In the territories of the Spanish and Portuguese empires including the Iberian Peninsula it continued, together with new styles, until the first decade of the 19th century. It followed Renaissance art and Mannerism and preceded the Rococo (in the past often referred to as "late Baroque") and Neoclassical styles. It was encouraged by the Catholic Church as a means to counter the simplicity and austerity of Protestant architecture, art, and music, though Lutheran Baroque art developed in parts of Europe as well. Comacchio
Comacchio (; egl, label= Comacchiese, Cmâc' ) is a town and ''comune'' of Emilia Romagna, Italy, in the province of Ferrara, from the provincial capital Ferrara. It was founded about two thousand years ago; across its history it was first governed by the Exarchate of Ravenna, then by the Duchy of Ferrara, and eventually returned to be part of the territories of the Papal States. For its landscape and its history, it is considered one of the major centres of the Po delta. Geography Comacchio is situated in a lagoon just north of the present mouth of the Reno. Theatine Order
The Theatines officially named the Congregation of Clerics Regular ( la, Ordo Clericorum Regularium), abreviated CR, is a Catholic order of clerics regular of Pontifical Right for men founded by Archbishop Gian Pietro Carafa in Sept. 14, 1524. Its members add the nominal letters C.R. after their names to indicate their membership in the Congregation. Foundation The order was founded by Saint Cajetan (Gaetano dei Conti di Thiene), Paolo Consiglieri, Bonifacio da Colle, and Giovanni Pietro Carafa (afterwards Pope Paul IV). Carafa was Bishop of Chieti; Chieti (Theate) is a city of the Abruzzi in Central Italy, from which the congregation adopted its specific name, to distinguish it from other congregations (Barnabites, Somaschi, Caracciolini, etc.) modelled upon it. Girolamo Baruffaldi
Girolamo Baruffaldi (10 July 1740 – 2 February 1817) was an Italian historian who wrote a biography of artists active in Ferrara. Biography Born in Ferrara, he studied initially with the Jesuit institute in Novellara, entered the order, and was busy in preaching and teaching rhetoric when the order was suppressed in 1773. He returned to his native city and, noted for his scholastic knowledge, became the librarian for the public library, permanent secretary of the Accademia Ariostea, and prefect of local education. Santa Maria Del Rosario, Comacchio
The Chiesa del Santo Rosario or Church of the Rosary is a Baroque-style, Roman Catholic church located in Piazza del Popolo in the city of Comacchio, in the province of Ferrara, region of Emilia-Romagna, Italy. History The church was built in 1618 by the ''Confraternity of the Santo Rosario''. The facade is in red brick, the portal in white Istrian stone. Four niches on the facade are empty. The interior houses a main altarpiece depicting a ''Madonna of the Rosary with Sts Dominic & Giustina'' (1640-1650) by Cesare Mezzogori. In the lower background of the painting is a depiction of the Battle of Lepanto. The painting is a reworking of the design of Guido Reni's ''Pallione del Voto o della Peste'' (1630). Reni in his painting has seven saints pleading to a Virgin and child with angels.
