The Central West Senior Hockey League (CWSHL) is a senior A ice hockey league in Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada. The league competes for the Herder Memorial Trophy and its teams can declare themselves eligible for the Allan Cup. History On June 4, 2014 four teams from the Newfoundland Senior Hockey League, the Clarenville Caribous, Western Royals, Gander Flyers and the Grand Falls-Windsor Cataracts, officially announced their departure and formed a new league to be the Central West Senior Hockey League (CWSHL). On February 25, 2015, Hockey Newfoundland and Labrador approved a request by the Central West Senior Hockey League in which they asked to play for the historic Herder Trophy because it was the only operating Senior A hockey league registered in the province. Joe Byrne Memorial Stadium
Joe Byrne Memorial Stadium is a multi-purpose arena located on Jones Street, adjacent to High Street, in Grand Falls-Windsor, Newfoundland and Labrador. The stadium is used to host trade shows, conferences, sporting events and special events. The ice arena was constructed in 1947/48 and was known as the Grand Falls Stadium until 1991. Construction The Anglo-Newfoundland Development Company built and owned the Grand Falls Stadium. The town of Grand Falls was incorporated in 1961 and that year bought the stadium from the company. The Steele Community Centre, previously named the Gander Community Centre, is a multi-purpose venue located on Airport Boulevard in Gander, Newfoundland and Labrador. The Corner Brook Civic Centre (previously named the Canada Games Centre and the Pepsi Centre) is a 3,100-seat multi-purpose arena in Corner Brook, Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada. Clarenville is a town on the east coast of Newfoundland in the province of Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada. Clarenville was incorporated in 1951. It is located in the Shoal Harbour valley, fronting an arm of the Atlantic Ocean called Random Sound. The Gander Flyers (also commonly known as the Kelly Ford Gander Flyers due to a sponsorship deal that began October 3, 2014) were a senior ice hockey team based in Gander, Newfoundland and Labrador and a member of in the Central West Senior Hockey League. History The Gander Flyers hockey club has its roots in picked teams from the Royal Canadian Air Force hockey league at RCAF Station Gander during the Second World War and from the Gander Hockey League picked team that entered Newfoundland inter-town senior hockey competition in 1947. Grand Falls-Windsor Cataracts
The Grand Falls-Windsor Cataracts are a senior ice hockey team based in Grand Falls-Windsor, Newfoundland and Labrador and a member of the Central Division of the Newfoundland Senior Hockey League. Since it was founded in 1966, the Cataracts hockey club has been awarded the Herder Memorial Trophy eight times as all-Newfoundland senior hockey champions, including three consecutive championships from 2014 to 2016.
