The Central Organisation of Sailors and Fishermen ( nl, Centrale van Zeevarenden ter Koopvaardij en Visserij, CKV) was a trade union representing seafarers in the Netherlands. The union was founded in 1956, when the Central Board of Captains and Officers of the Merchant Navy merged with the fisheries section of the Central Union of Transport Workers. Like both its predecessors, it affiliated to the Dutch Confederation of Trade Unions. The Central Union of Transport Workers ( nl, Centrale Bond van Transportarbeiders, CBT) was a trade union representing workers in the transport sector in the Netherlands. The union was founded on 1 January 1918, when the General Dutch Union of Port Authority Workers merged with the Union of Seamen. Like both its predecessors, it affiliated to the Dutch Confederation of Trade Unions. In 1950, it was renamed as the Central Union of Transport Company Workers. By 1954, the union had 35,216 members. The Dutch Confederation of Trade Unions ( nl, Nederlands Verbond van Vakverenigingen, NVV) was a Dutch social-democratic trade union. History The NVV was founded in 1906 as a merger of fifteen smaller unions, as a result of the inability of the previous unions to control the radical elements of the workers movement in the railworkers' strike of 1903. The NVV was led by Henri Polak, who was a prominent member of the socialist Social Democratic Workers' Party. During World War II the NVV was taken over by the German occupiers, its Dutch leader was Henk Woudenberg. Under the German occupation the NVV was transformed into a Nazi union. After the war these influences were purged and the NVV cooperated tightly with the centre left government to create a welfare state based on the principles of corporatism. The Federation of Maritime Workers ( nl, Federatie van Werknemers in de Zeevaart, FWZ) was a trade union representing sailors in the Netherlands. The union was founded in 1967, when the recently-founded General Association of Seafarers merged with the Central Organisation of Sailors and Fishermen. Originally named the Federation of Workers' Organisations in Maritime Shipping, like both its predecessors, it affiliated to the Dutch Confederation of Trade Unions (NVV). In 1969, its fishing section transferred to the Dutch Transport Workers' Union, but in 1970, it was joined by the Association of Captains and Officers of the Merchant Navy. In 1974, the union formed the Federation of Transport Trade Unions, with the Transport Workers' Union NVV and the Transport Workers' Union NKV, but it left in 1976. Pieter De Vries
Pieter de Vries (1897 – November 1975) was a Dutch trade union leader. De Vries became a sailor when he was 18, and joined a trade union two years later. From 1927 to 1931, he worked for the Amsterdam Chamber of Trade in the Dutch East Indies. He then returned to the Netherlands, and in 1932, he became the assistant secretary of the Master Mariners' and Mates' Union. He held the post until 1942, when the Nazis dissolved all the Dutch trade unions. In 1947, de Vries was elected as president of the Netherlands Seafarers' and Fishermen's Union. The following year, he was additionally elected as president of the International Mercantile Marine Officers' Association, although this organisation was largely inactive, so the role involved little work. Trade Unions In The Netherlands
Trade Unions play a major role in the corporatist Dutch economy. Dynamics In 2001 about 25% of the Dutch people who were employed were organized in a union. There are three major unions: the Christian-democratic " Christelijk Nationaal Vakverbond (CNV)", the social-democratically oriented " Federatie Nederlandse Vakbeweging (FNV)" and the " Federation of Managerial and Professional Staff Unions (MHP)". All are federations of sector-based labour unions. The FNV is with about 1,4 million members the largest of the three. The CNV has 350.000 members and the MHP 160.000. The FNV has 17 affiliate unions, the CNV 11 and the MHP 4.
