Central Oregonian
The ''Central Oregonian'' is a twice-weekly newspaper published in Prineville, Oregon, Prineville in the U.S. state of Oregon. Tracing its roots to 1881, the paper covers Central Oregon where it is the newspaper of record for Crook County, Oregon, Crook County. In 1921, a merger of the Prineville ''Call'' and the Crook County ''Journal'' formed the ''Central Oregonian''. The ''Journal'' had previously absorbed the Mitchell ''Monitor''. Doris Donnelly owned the Central Oregonian prior to Elmo Smith. Elmo Smith owned the paper until his death in 1968,when his son Denny Smith took over ownership of the ''Central Oregonian'' and other newspapers that became Eagle Newspapers (Oregon), Eagle Newspapers. The Pamplin Media Group (PMG) is a media conglomerate owned by Robert B. Pamplin, Jr. and operating primarily in the Portland metropolitan area in the U.S. state of Oregon. As of 2019, the company owns 25 newspapers and employs 200 people. History The ''Portland Tribune'' newspaper, founded by Pamplin in 2001, is the largest newspaper in the group. Elmo Smith
Elmo Everett Smith (November 19, 1909July 15, 1968) was an American Republican politician who served as the 27th Governor of Oregon from 1956 to 1957. Early life Smith was born in Grand Junction, Colorado on November 19, 1909. At the age of ten, his mother died, and at age thirteen, his father died, leaving young Elmo an orphan. He was sent to live with his uncle on a ranch near Wilder, Idaho. He supported himself financially as he pursued an education at the College of Idaho in Caldwell. Smith received his B.A. in History in 1932, and moved to nearby Ontario, Oregon, just across the Snake River from Idaho. A paywall is a method of restricting access to content, with a purchase or a paid subscription, especially news. The ''Portland Tribune'' is a weekly newspaper published every Wednesday in Portland, Oregon, United States. It is part of the Pamplin Media Group, which publishes a number of community newspapers in the Portland metropolitan area. Eagle Newspapers is an American newspaper publisher serving the states of Oregon, Washington and Idaho. History The origins of the company date back to 1933 when Elmo Smith and his wife, Dorothy, borrowed $25 to establish a mimeographed weekly newspaper in Ontario, Oregon. In 1948, Smith sold the paper and used the proceeds to purchase the Blue Mountain Eagle in John Day, Oregon. That same year Smith and his friend, Bill Robinson, purchased The Madras Pioneer and the family business was incorporated. In 1961, the company purchased the Hood River News. The company changed its name to Eagle Newspapers, Inc. in 1979. In 2013, Eagle Newspapers sold six Oregon newspapers in Central Oregon and the Willamette Valley to the Pamplin Media Group. Denny Smith
Dennis Alan "Denny" Smith (born January 19, 1938) is an American businessman and former United States congressman from the state of Oregon. A native of the state, he served in the Air Force before working in the airline industry and taking over the family's newspaper business. A Republican, he served ten years in Congress from 1981 until 1991. His father was former Oregon Governor Elmo Smith. Early life Dennis Smith was born in the Eastern Oregon city of Ontario, Oregon, on January 19, 1938. In 1956, he graduated from Grant Union High School in John Day and enrolled at Willamette University in Salem. He joined the United States Air Force in 1958, and served until 1960, when he joined the Oregon Air National Guard. Smith then earned a bachelor of arts degree from Willamette in 1961. Prineville, Oregon
Prineville is a city in and the seat of Crook County, Oregon, United States. It was named for the first merchant located in the present location, Barney Prine. The population was 9,253 at the 2010 census. History Prineville was founded in 1877 when Monroe Hodges filed the original plat for the city. The post office for the community had been established with the name of Prine on April 13, 1871, but changed to Prineville on December 23, 1872.
