Central High School (Fargo, North Dakota)
Central High School, of Fargo, North Dakota, was the first public high school in Fargo. Central High School served grades 9–12, while Central School served K-8. CHS was built originally in the early 1800s, but became "finalized" and had was moved to 2nd Ave South in 1921. Central was the second high school on the site. The first school opened in 1892, but was destroyed by fire on Dec. 28, 1916. Thousands of people were reported to at least briefly have stopped to watch firefighters fight the fire in temperatures that dipped to 8 degrees below zero, according to Forum reports. After the old building was razed, the second Central High was opened for the 1920–21 school year. Superintendent Arthur Deaner called it modern and, in what now appears to be an ironic twist, "fireproof throughout." Fargo ( /ˈfɑɹɡoʊ/) is a city in and the county seat of Cass County, North Dakota, United States. According to the 2020 census, its population was 125,990, making it the most populous city in the state and the 219th-most populous city in the United States. Fargo North High School
Fargo North High School, more commonly known in the district as Fargo North or North High, is a public high school located in Fargo, North Dakota, United States. It currently serves over 900 students in grades 9–12 and is a part of the Fargo Public Schools system. The official school colors are navy blue and gold, and its mascot is the Spartans. History North High is the oldest existing high school in Fargo after its predecessor, Fargo Central High School, was destroyed in a fire in 1966. Over the following decades, the building was expanded several times. The most recent expansion was completed in 2006 when a new wing was added to the southeast part of the building to accommodate freshmen after Fargo Public Schools relocated them from the nearby Ben Franklin Jr. High School (now Ben Franklin Middle School). Fargo Public Schools (FPS) is a public school district in Fargo, North Dakota, United States. The district owns and operates in three comprehensive high schools, three middle schools, and fourteen elementary schools. FPS also operates an alternative high school and a special needs pre-school. Governance and funding The Fargo Public Schools is governed by a nine-member Board of Education, whose members may serve an unlimited number of four-year terms. Board members oversee the district's annual operating budget, which is $134 million during the 2013–14 school year. Currently, the school district's operating levy is 139 mills. Sixty-nine percent of the district's general fund revenue comes from the state's foundation aid.
