El Centinela (Baja California)
Mount Signal is a mountain west of Mexicali, Baja California, Mexico, on Mexican Federal Highway 2. The peak is also known as "Weeishpa" by the native community Kumiai or "Cerro del Centinela" or simply: El Centinela (the sentinel) by the Mexicans. The northern slope of the mountain begins at the border between Mexico and the United States, the south side is bordered by Federal Highway 2. It has an elevation of about 781 meter and is the northernmost peak of the Cocopah mountain range or ''sierra cucapá''. Mount Signal was used by both native and pioneer explorers of the region, to guide them through the desert. The mountain is on the shield of the town of Mexicali and on the shield and flag of Imperial County, California but each from their own perspective. La Centinela
La Centinela is an archaeological site in Peru which was an active administrative center during both the Inca and pre-Inca periods. History La Centinela was the Incan capital of the kingdom of the Chincha. It is "an unusual site in that it is one of the very few places where the Incas incorporated a major state installation into a preexisting, and still functioning, non-Inca capital." In 1958, Dwight T. Wallace discovered a system of straight roads emanating from La Centinela, suggesting a highly centralized pre-Incan administration. Site La Centinela lies about 200 km south of Lima in the Chincha Valley and about 1 km away from the Pacific Ocean and is surrounded by irrigated agricultural land. Centinela Avenue is a 10.2 mile major street in the Westside region of Los Angeles County, California. Geography Centinela Avenue is a major thoroughfare in Culver City, Inglewood, Ladera Heights, Mar Vista, Santa Monica, and West Los Angeles. It is named after the 19th century Rancho Aguaje de la Centinela, whose site of former ranchlands it passes through. Route The street runs primarily north–south, with a southern east–west section. Centinela Creek
Ballona Creek (pronunciation: “Bah-yo-nuh” or “Buy-yo-nah” ) is an channelized stream in southwestern Los Angeles County, California, United States, that was once a “year-round river lined with sycamores and willows.” Ballona Creek and neighboring Ballona Wetlands remain a prime bird-watching spot for waterfowl, shorebirds, warblers, and birds of prey. The urban watercourse begins in the Mid-City neighborhood of Los Angeles, flows through Culver City and Del Rey, and passes the Ballona Wetlands Ecological Preserve, the sailboat harbor Marina del Rey, and the small beachside community of Playa del Rey before draining into Santa Monica Bay. The Ballona Creek drainage basin carries water from the Santa Monica Mountains on the north, from the Baldwin Hills to the south, and as far as the Harbor Freeway (I-110) to the east. Centinela Springs
The Aguaje de Centinela, or Centinela Springs, was a valued source of local spring water for Rancho Aguaje de la Centinela and what is now southwest Los Angeles and Inglewood in Southern California. Monuments California Historical Landmark marker 363 is located at the corner of Centinela Ave. and Florence Blvd. in the city of Inglewood, California, and is one of two monuments to the tapped-out Centinela Springs located in Edward Vincent Jr. Park (formerly Centinela Park). The older springs monument at the park dates to the Great Depression era and was designed by Archibald Garner, who also created the “Centinela Springs” mahogany wood carving for the New Deal Section of Fine Arts at the Hillcrest Avenue post office building. The ''Catholic Sentinel'' was the Catholic newspaper of the Archdiocese of Portland. Reportedly the oldest Catholic newspaper on the West Coast, it was published by Oregon Catholic Press, which also published ''El Centinela'', a Spanish-language newspaper. It published an online edition from 1996 to 2022. In 2022, it was announced that both the ''Sentinel'' and ''El Centinela'' would be discontinued as of October 1, 2022. History The ''Catholic Sentinel'' was started in 1869 by grocer Henry Herman and printer J. F. Atkinson in response to anti-Catholicism.
