Centerville Community School District (Iowa)
The Centerville Community School District is a public school district headquartered in Centerville, Iowa. It serves areas in Appanoose County, including Centerville, Cincinnati, Exline, Mystic, Numa, Rathbun and the surrounding rural areas. The school's athletic teams are the Reds and Redettes, their colors are Scarlet and Black, and they are in the South Central Conference. Tom Rubel was hired as the interim superintendent in 2016. Centerville is a city in and the county seat of Appanoose County, Iowa, Appanoose County, Iowa, United States. The population was 5,412 in the 2020 United States Census, 2020 census, a decline from 5,924 in 2000 United States Census, 2000. After the turn of the 20th century Centerville's coal mining industry attracted European immigrants from Sweden, Italy, Croatia, and Albania. Centerville is also home of the largest town square in the state of Iowa. History Founded in 1846 by Jonathon Stratton under the name of "Chaldea," the city was planned around a unique two-block long city square. The name was later changed to Senterville, named after William Tandy Senter, a prominent Tennessee politician. Appanoose County, Iowa
Appanoose County is a county in the U.S. state of Iowa. As of the 2020 census, the population was 12,317. Its county seat is Centerville. History Appanoose County was formed on February 17, 1843, from open territory. It was named for the Meskwaki Chief Appanoose, who did not engage in war against Black Hawk, advocating peace. The present county seat was formerly called Chaldea, and was later renamed to Senterville in honor of Congressman William Tandy Senter of Tennessee. In April 1848, the courthouse, constructed at the expense of $160, was put into use and served as such until 1857. The second courthouse was opened in 1864, and was burned down to the first floor during an explosive Fourth of July fireworks demonstration. The third courthouse was dedicated on May 21, 1903, and remains in use. South Central Conference (Iowa)
The South Central Conference is a high school athletic conference in Iowa. Made up of mid-sized 2A and 3A schools, the conference currently has seven members, five of which are based in their respective county seats. Because of the lack of student population in southern Iowa, most of the schools are the lone district in their county, or are flanked only by very small schools. Exline, Iowa
Exline is a city in Appanoose County, Iowa, United States. The population was 160 in the 2020 census, a decline from 191 in 2000. History Exline was surveyed by J.J. Hall in 1873 for David Exline, who settled there and established a successful dry-goods business, and it was incorporated in 1904. Initially, the town was known as Caldwell City or Bob Town. The opening of a post office in 1877 forced the town to settle on an official name. Exline grew considerably with the coal boom. United Mine Workers local 812 was organized in Exline in 1899; by 1907, it had 200 members. In 1912, Local 812 had 180 members. In 1906, Exline was home to the Exline Coal Company, with two mine shafts west of town, the Iowa Block Coal Company also had an Exline mine, the White Oak Coal Company had a mine north of town, and the inactive Royal Mine was to the east. Mystic is a city in Appanoose County, Iowa, United States. The population was 322 at the time of the 2020 census. History At the end of the 19th century, "the valley of Walnut Creek was one continuous mining camp, known under different names, Jerome, Diamond, Mystic, Clarkdale, Rathbun and Darby" (later known as Darbyville).H. Numa is a city in Appanoose County, Iowa, United States. The population was 68 in the 2020 census, a decline from 109 in 2000. Geography Numa's longitude and latitude coordinates in decimal form are 40.685566, −92.978596. According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of , all land. History Numa was laid out in 1871. In 1907, fire destroyed the surface equipment of the Numa Block mine, then the most productive mine in the county. The Numa Block shaft was deep, giving access to a coal seam. The Numa Block Coal Company also owned mines in Seymour, (about to the west). In 1912, Local 875 of the United Mine Workers, based in Numa, had 392 members. The original Numa Block mine was closed in 1915, after having undermined . Rathbun, Iowa
Rathbun is a city in Appanoose County, Iowa, United States. The population was 43 at the time of the 2020 census. History Incorporated in 1897, Rathbun was established in 1892 as a mining town. It was named for Charles H. Rathbun, a mine official. At the end of the 19th century, "the valley of Walnut Creek was one continuous mining camp, known under different names, Jerome, Diamond, Mystic, Clarksdale, Rathbun and Darby" (later known as Darbyville). The Star Coal Company of Streator, Ill. operated the Rathbun Mine, with an shaft. This mine was in operation in 1895, and by 1908 it was considered one of the best equipped longwall mines in the county.
