Center For Social Development
The Center for Social Development (CSD) is a research center at Washington University's George Warren Brown School of Social Work. Its focus is on innovations in asset-building and social development practice and policy. History In 1991, Michael Sherraden published ''Assets and the Poor: A New American Welfare Policy'', which proposed using asset-building policy as a community development strategy. Shanti Khinduka, the dean of the Brown School, was impressed by Sherraden's ideas and invited him to direct a new research institution, the Center for Social Development. CSD was opened in 1994. CSD designed and implemented the American Dream Demonstration, the first systematic test of asset-building policy in the United States. The Brown School at Washington University in St. Louis is a school for the training of social science researchers. The Brown School offers a Master of Social Work (MSW), a Master of Public Health (MPH), a Master of Social Policy, a PhD in Social Work, and a PhD in Public Health Sciences. As one of the academic units of Washington University in St. Louis, the Brown School was founded in 1925 as the department of social work. The school was endowed in 1945 by Bettie Bofinger Brown and named for her husband, George Warren Brown, a St. Louis philanthropist and co-founder of the Brown Shoe Company. The school was the first in the country to have a building for the purpose of social work education, and it is also a founding member of the Association of Schools and Programs of Public Health. American Dream Demonstration
In banking, the American Dream Demonstration (ADD) was a program proxy developed to test the potential impact of Individual Development Accounts (IDA) and ran from 1997-2002. During its tenure, the ADD program demonstrated through 2,377 accounts, that IDAs can be delivered effectively by a wide range of community organizations and financial institutions. The ADD initiative was evaluated by eight different research methods including implementation assessment, participant case studies, cross sectional-survey, monitoring, in-depth interviews, cost analysis, experimental impact evaluation and assessment of community effects. Individual families During the six-year ADD demonstration, 2,364 low-income individuals became accountholders. It was evaluated that those with the lowest incomes in ADD’s saved more than those who earned more, with 46% were below the poverty line and 21% at less than half of the poverty line.
