Center City, Texas
Center City is an unincorporated community in Mills County, located in the U.S. state of Texas. According to the Handbook of Texas, the community had a population of 15 in 2003. History The area in what is known as Center City today was first settled around 1870. When Center City was first laid out, a large area was saved for a courthouse to be built on, with several businesses being built around the square. These included saloons, dry goods stores, two blacksmith shops, a general store, and a drugstore. Afterward, Goldthwaite became the county seat. A post office was established in 1874 and remained in operation until 1920 when mail was sent from Goldthwaite. The community also had a gristmill in 1874. A church was established six years later. The population was first recorded as 100 in 1885. Two more churches were built in 1910. There were three stores and 75 residents in Center City in the late 1940s. It dropped to 15 from 1970 to 2003. Star Independent School District
Star Independent School District was a public school district based in the community of Star, Texas, USA. Located in Mills County, the district extended into portions of Hamilton and Lampasas counties. It was about west of Waco. Star ISD had one school that served students in grades kindergarten through twelve. History The Center City, Hurst Ranch, McGirk, Moline, Payne Gap, Plainview, and Pleasant Grove schools consolidated into Star City in the period 1930 through 1938. Beginning circa 2006 the district experienced a decline in enrollment and funding. In 2013 the district had 56 students; the State of Texas reduces funding if a school district's enrollment is fewer than 90 students. That year the district's closure was announced. The final superintendent, Barbara Marchbanks, stated that parents leaving the area to find other jobs caused enrollment to decline. Goldthwaite, Texas
Goldthwaite is a town in Mills County, Texas, United States, that serves as the county seat. The population was 1,878 at the 2010 census. History Goldthwaite existed as a small village prior to the arrival of the Gulf, Colorado and Santa Fe Railway in 1885. The population increased after the railway began selling lots. The town is named after George (Joe) Goldthwaite (1836–1892), an employee at the railway. Goldthwaite was once known as "The City of Windmills" because of the large number of wells in the city. Albert Geoffrey McElhinney OAM (20 December 1922 – 21 July 2017), better known by his stage name Geoff Mack, was an Australian country singer, songwriter and aircraft mechanic. As a songwriter, he wrote the song "I've Been Everywhere" which was an Australian hit for Lucky Starr in April 1962 and became popular in North America when adapted for Hank Snow in November. More than 130 cover versions have been recorded. In 2008, Mack was inducted into the Australian Roll of Renown. Biography Born on 20 December 1922 in Surrey Hills, a suburb of Melbourne. Evant, Texas
Evant ( ) is a town in Coryell and Hamilton counties in central Texas, United States. The population was 426 at the 2010 census. The Coryell County portion of Evant is part of the Killeen–Temple–Fort Hood Metropolitan Statistical Area. History The town of Evant was first a settlement called "Langford Cove", settled by Asa Langford and his family in 1855. Langford served as postmaster in the first post office, named "Cove", established in February 1876. By the late 1850s, Langford had built a general store, a blacksmith shop, and a sawmill near the current site of the town. An Alabama man named Evant Brooks purchased some of land from Langford in the late 1870s. In 1881, Brooks donated of land "for sale and settlement as a town", and by 1884 the growing community changed its name to "Evant" in Brooks' honor. Live oak or evergreen oak is any of a number of oaks in several different sections of the genus ''Quercus'' that share the characteristic of evergreen foliage.
