Celsius Family
The Celsius family descended from the vicar of Ovanåker parish in Gävleborg County, Sweden, Nicolaus Magni Travillagæus, later Alptaneus (1577–1658). His son, the mathematician and astronomer Magnus Celsius, took the name Celsius which was the Latinized form of his father's vicarage and his childhood home. A branch of the family was ennobled on 9 November 1756, with the name von Celse, Olof Celsius the Elder's children. The von Celse branch of the family became extinct in 1838, with the death of Lieutenant-Colonel Olof von Celse. Ovanåker is a locality situated in Ovanåker Municipality Ovanåker Municipality (''Ovanåkers kommun'') is a municipality in Gävleborg County, east central Sweden. Gävleborg County
Gävleborg County ( sv, Gävleborgs län) is a county or '' län'' on the Baltic Sea coast of Sweden. It borders the counties of Uppsala, Västmanland, Dalarna, Jämtland and Västernorrland. The capital is Gävle. Provinces Gävleborg County encompasses the provinces of Gästrikland and Hälsingland, except for the northwestern part of the latter which is located in Jämtland County, most notably Ytterhogdal. Olof Celsius (the elder) (19 July 1670 – 24 June 1756) was a Swedish botanist, philologist and clergyman, He was a professor at Uppsala University, Sweden. Celsius was a mentor of the botanist and scientist Carl Linnaeus. Celsius wrote his most famous book on biblical plants, ''Hierobotanicon'', in 1745–47. Celsius was also a prominent runologist. Olof Celsius's father was the mathematician Magnus Celsius and his nephew Anders Celsius (son of his brother and astronomy professor Nils Celsius) was an astronomer who invented a temperature scale where 100 originally represented the freezing point of water and 0 represented the boiling point. Anders Celsius
Anders Celsius (; 27 November 170125 April 1744) was a Swedish astronomer, physicist and mathematician. He was professor of astronomy at Uppsala University from 1730 to 1744, but traveled from 1732 to 1735 visiting notable observatories in Germany, Italy and France. He founded the Uppsala Astronomical Observatory in 1741, and in 1742 proposed (an inverted form of) the Centigrade temperature scale which was later renamed Celsius in his honour. Olof Celsius The Younger
Olof Celsius the Younger (15 December 1716 – 15 February 1794) was a Swedish civil servant, church official, politician and historian. He was professor of history at Uppsala University from 1747, bishop of the Diocese of Lund from 1777, and member of the Swedish Academy from 1786. He was the son of Olof Celsius and cousin of Anders Celsius. Biography Celsius was born in Uppsala, Sweden, to botanist Olof Celsius and Margareta Insulander. In 1740 Celsius received his Master of Philosophy. In 1742 he became docent in history of education, in 1744 deputy librarian and in 1747 professor of history at Uppsala University. After being ordained as a priest, he received his Doctor of Theology in 1752. In 1753 he was appointed vicar of the parish of Kungsholmen and in 1760 of Jakob and Johannes Parish in Stockholm.
