Celo Community
Celo Community, Incorporated ( ) is a communal settlement in the Western North Carolina, Western mountains of North Carolina, United States, located in the South Toe River valley of Yancey County, North Carolina, Yancey County, between the Unincorporated area, unincorporated areas of Celo and Hamrick. It was founded in 1937 by Arthur Ernest Morgan. Celo is a land trust with its own rules of taxation and land tenure that runs its internal government by consensus. The community does not require its members to accept any religion or ideology, but is based on ideals of cooperation between residents and care for the natural environment. Camp Celo
Camp Celo is a privately owned Quaker-based summer camp for children aged 7–12 located in Celo Community of Yancey County, North Carolina. Program Camp Celo offers a junior camp (for children ages 7–10) and a senior camp (ages 11 and 12). Activities include camping, hiking, swimming, gardening, animal care, arts & crafts, wood shop, and field games. The camp operates a swimming hole on the South Toe River. Campers help maintain an organic garden and farm animals. Senior campers participate in extensive backpacking trips in the nearby Black Mountains, Linville Gorge Wilderness, Wilson Creek Wilderness, and on the Appalachian Trail. The camp serves approximately 35 junior campers and 27 senior campers per session. About 325 campers attend each summer. Alain Celo (born 1960) is a French composer and violist with the . He has written about twenty works, mainly instrumental. He followed a complete cursus of music writing and musical composition at the , with . He was awarded the SACEM Prize, and also received advice from Claude Lefebvre and George Crumb. His influences range from Debussy and Stravinsky to Ligeti, through jazz and ethnic music.
