Battle Of Cedar Mountain
The Battle of Cedar Mountain, also known as Slaughter's Mountain or Cedar Run, took place on August 9, 1862, in Culpeper County, Virginia, as part of the American Civil War. Union forces under Maj. Gen. Nathaniel P. Banks attacked Confederate forces under Maj. Gen. Thomas J. "Stonewall" Jackson near Cedar Mountain as the Confederates marched on Culpeper Court House to forestall a Union advance into central Virginia. After nearly being driven from the field in the early part of the battle, a Confederate counterattack broke the Union lines resulting in a Confederate victory. The battle was the first combat of the Northern Virginia campaign. Background On June 26, Maj. Gen. John Pope was placed in command of the newly constituted Union Army of Virginia. Cedar Mountain, also known as Spirit Mountain, is a prominent summit located in Park County, Wyoming, United States. Description The peak is situated immediately west of the town of Cody. It is set in the Absaroka Range at the western edge of the Bighorn Basin. Topographic relief is significant as the west aspect rises above Buffalo Bill Reservoir in one mile. The Cedar Mountain name has been officially adopted by the United States Board on Geographic Names. Buffalo Bill Buffalo Bill was a world-famous resident and founder of Cody, and in his 1906 will requested to be buried on Cedar Mountain, with a buffalo monument marking the spot and overlooking the town. Cedar Mountain Formation
The Cedar Mountain Formation is the name given to a distinctive sedimentary geologic formation in eastern Utah, spanning most of the early and mid-Cretaceous. The formation was named for Cedar Mountain (Utah), Cedar Mountain in northern Emery County, Utah, where William Lee Stokes first studied the exposures in 1944. Geology The formation occurs between the underlying Morrison Formation and overlying Naturita Formation (sometimes formerly called the Dakota Formation). It is composed of non-marine sediments, that is, sediments deposited in rivers, lakes and on flood plains. Based on various fossils and radiometric dating, radiometric dates, the Cedar Mountain Formation was deposited during the last half of the Early Cretaceous Epoch, about 127 - 98 million years ago (mya). The Cedar Mountain Range is a short 20 mi (32 km) long, mountain range in southwest Luna County, New Mexico, USA, just north of the Mexico–United States border with Chihuahua.
