Cecil Sandford (footballer)
Cecil Everard Sandford (2 August 1874 – 12 October 1946) was an Australian rules footballer who played with Geelong and St Kilda in the Victorian Football League (VFL). He was educated at Geelong College. Sandford spent the 1897 and 1898 seasons at Geelong, but only put together eight games. He was instantly appointed captain of St Kilda, when he joined them in 1901. His stint as captain began well, with the club ending a four-year win-less streak in his first game for the club. After losing the captaincy for the 1901 season, he had a good year, topping St Kilda's goal-kicking, with nine goals. Lara, Victoria
Lara is a town in Victoria, 18 km north-east of the Geelong CBD, inland from the Princes Freeway to Melbourne. Its population at the 2016 census was 16,355. History The explorers Hume and Hovell arrived at Lara on December 16, 1824, believing that they had reached Westernport Bay. They recorded that the Aboriginals described the bay as ''Djillong'' and land as ''Corayo'', suggesting origins for the names of Geelong and Corio. The area was originally named Kennedy's Creek but was also given several different names including Duck Ponds, Hovell's Creek, Cheddar, Swindon and Lara Lake. The area of Lara was no more than a few farms at this time. The railway through the town was opened in 1857 along with the local railway station, with several subdivisions then announced. A Post Office opened on 1 March 1858 as Duck Ponds, renamed Hovell's Creek in 1872, and finally Lara in 1884. Ben Sandford
Ben Sandford, (born 12 March 1979 in Rotorua) is a New Zealand skeleton racer who has competed since 2002. He finished tenth in the men's skeleton event at the 2006 Winter Olympics in Turin. He finished 11th at the 2010 Winter Olympics. Early life Sandford was born and raised in Rotorua, attending Rotorua Boys' High School. He later attended the Victoria University of Wellington, where he graduated with bachelor's degrees in law and geography in 2002. Sport career Sandford's best finish at the FIBT World Championships was 3rd in the men's skeleton event at Lake Placid in 2012. With his bronze medal, Ben became the second person from the Southern Hemisphere to medal at the FIBT World Championships, after his uncle Bruce Sandford who won gold in the same event in 1992 in Calgary. 1901 VFL Season
The 1901 VFL season was the fifth season of the Victorian Football League (VFL), the highest level senior Australian rules football competition in Victoria. The season featured eight clubs, ran from 4 May until 7 September, and comprised a 17-game home-and-away season followed by a finals series featuring the top four clubs. The premiership was won by the Essendon Football Club for the second time, after it defeated by 27 points in the 1901 VFL Grand Final.
