Cayuta Creek
Cayuta Creek (Kay-YOO-tuh) is a tributary of the Susquehanna River that flows through Schuyler, Chemung and Tioga counties in New York state, and Bradford County, Pennsylvania. Cayuta Lake
Cayuta Lake is a small lake located in Schuyler County, New York, United States. It is within the Town of Catharine, about north of Odessa. The lake is also referred to locally as Little Lake. Name origin The name "Cayuta" is of Native American origin, and is shared with a nearby stream, town, and hamlet. The name may have been derived from the word ''geihate'' ("a river"), or it may be a corrupted form of ''kanyatiye'' ("a lake"). Additional possibilities for the name's origin include ''keunton'' (" prickly ash") or an abbreviated form of ''kayahtane'' ("mosquito"). The lake was also known to Native Americans as ''Ganiatarenge'' ("at the lake"). By legend the lake is named after a Seneca princess, who was kidnapped by another tribe, causing her mother's tears to form the lake. An older spelling, still sometimes used, is "Kayutah". Van Etten (village), New York
Van Etten is a hamlet and census-designated place in Chemung County, New York, United States. It was a village that was absorbed by the Town of Van Etten on December 31, 2018. The population was 537 at the 2010 census. The name came from the two brothers who founded the village. The village of Van Etten was in the town of Van Etten near its eastern town line. The village was northeast of Elmira and was part of the Elmira Metropolitan Statistical Area. History The village was founded around 1798 by James and Joshua Van Etten. Previously called "Halls Corners", at first the community was called "Van Ettenville", but was incorporated in 1876 as "Van Etten". The first railroad line arrived in 1871. In 2017, the village of Van Etten voted to dissolve and rejoin the Town of Van Etten. As of the 2019 American Community Survey, the U.S. Census Bureau still lists Van Etten as a village. Waverly is the largest village in Tioga County, New York, United States. According to the 2010 U.S. Census, Waverly had a population of 4,177. It is located southeast of Elmira in the Southern Tier region. This village was incorporated as the southwest part of the town of Barton in 1854. The village name is attributed to Joseph "Uncle Joe" Hallett, founder of its first Fire Department and pillar of the community, who conceived the name by dropping the second "e" from the name of his favorite author's novel, ''Waverley'' by Sir Walter Scott. Barton is a town in southwestern Tioga County, New York, United States. The population was 8,570 at the 2020 census. It is southeast of Elmira. History The Sullivan Expedition of 1779 passed through this region. The first settlers arrived ''circa'' 1791. The Town of Barton was established in 1824 from the town of Tioga. The region was already settled in 1796 when John Shepard bought by the current location of Waverly. It is reported that the town was named after Belva Ann Lockwood of Royalton, New York (near Lockport), one of the first female lawyers in the country, the first woman to argue a case before the Supreme Court and the first woman to be on an official ballot running for president of the US in 1884 and 1888.
