The Grotte aux Fées ("Cave of the Fairies") in the cliffs above Saint-Maurice, Switzerland is a natural limestone solution show cave, featuring a high underground waterfall, claimed as the world's highest waterfall in a show cave. The cave was the first show cave in Switzerland. The cave was known until the mid 19th century as the ''Trou aux Fayes'' or "Sheep Hole," as it was used as a sheepfold. The cave was known from Roman times, but was first publicized in 1863 as a tourist attraction, with the present name being used from 1865. The cave was explored in 1831 when a party mapped of passages. From 1863 Professor Chanoine Gard of the Abbey College of Saint-Maurice cleared passageways and conducted tours on behalf of an orphanage that he had founded. From 1865 the cave was operated by the Sisters of Saint-Maurice, who coined the present name. In 1925 additional exploration extended the cave network from the top of the waterfall. The Hölloch ( en, Hellhole) is a long cave in the municipality Muotathal in Switzerland. In addition to being the second longest cave in Europe, it is also notable for having a depth of . The Hölloch is an example of a karst cave system. Exploration The cave was first scientifically explored in 1875 by a group led by Alois Ulrich. Later expeditions in the 1950s by Alfred Bögli, one of the pioneers of speleology, managed to explore a large part of the cave. The explored length of the cave increased from in 1952 to by 1968. It was the first cave in the world where the explored length reached 100 km, and until the linkage of the Flint Ridge Cave System to the Mammoth Cave System in 1972, it was believed to be the largest cave system in the world. Siebenhengste-Hohgant-Höhle is a cave located in Switzerland, in the Canton of Bern north of Lake Thun, between the villages of Eriz and Habkern. The cave network formed in the Urgonian Limestone Formation (Aptian age). The cave was first explored in 1966 by the Club Jurassien, a speleology club from La Chaux-de-Fonds in the canton of Neuchâtel, Switzerland, when three of its 42 entrances were discovered. Explorations were later undertaken by many different regional caving clubs. In 2019, it was the world's 12th longest cave, with a 164.5 km development.. Wildkirchli () are three interlinked caves situated in the Alpstein massif in the Appenzell Innerrhoden canton of Switzerland, north-east of Mount Säntis Switzerland. The caves are located at a height of . They are notable for the traces of Paleolithic Neanderthal habitation, dating to c. 40,000 BP, and cave bear bones dating to 90,000–40,000 BP. A museum at the site houses a full bear skeleton that was found in one of the caves.
