Cauleen Smith
Cauleen Smith (born September 25, 1967) is an American born filmmaker and multimedia artist. She is best known for her experimental works that address the African-American identity, specifically the issues facing black women today. Smith is best known for her feature film ''Drylongso''. Smith currently teaches in the School of Art at the California Institute of the Arts. Education In 1991 Smith completed her B.A in Cinema at San Francisco State University. While a student there, she completed several films, two of which received a lot of attention: ''Daily Rains'', which was completed in 1990, and ''Chronicles of a Lying Spirit by Kelly Gabron'', which was fully completed in 1993. Once she finished her B.A., Smith was accepted into M.F.A. program at UCLA. Her work there gained worldwide recognition. Drylongso (film)
''Drylongso'' is a 1998 American coming-of-age drama film directed by Cauleen Smith, who co-wrote the film with Salim Akil. The film, which was shot on location in Oakland, California on 16 mm film, centers on a young Black photography student and deals with numerous issues relating to race, gender, and identity. The title is derived from the Gullah word for "ordinary." ''Drylongso'' was screened at film festivals around the United States and won multiple awards, including an Independent Spirit Award for Smith and the Grand Jury Prize at the Urbanworld Film Festival. Aram Han Sifuentes
Aram Han Sifuentes (born 1986 Seoul, South Korea) is a Korean American social practice fiber artist, writer, curator, and an adjunct professor at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. Life and career Sifuentes was born in Seoul, South Korea, and immigrated to Modesto, California, in 1992. Sifuentes attended the University of California, Berkeley, the Maryland Institute College of Art and the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. Sifuentes's work has been displayed in various national and international exhibitions. She was the 2013 Windgate Museum Intern at the Smithsonian's Archive of American Art, and is independently curating an AAA oral history collection on craft. Sifuentes was also a 2012-2013 Curatorial Fellow at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. Heinz Awards
The Heinz Awards are individual achievement honors given annually by the Heinz Family Foundation. The Heinz Awards each year recognize outstanding individuals for their innovative contributions in three areas: the Arts, the Economy and the Environment. The award was established in 1993 by Teresa Heinz, the chairwoman of the Heinz Family Foundation, in honor of her late husband, U.S. Senator H. John Heinz III. Artadia is an American arts non-profit organization founded in 1999. They are headquartered in New York City, and support visual artists with unrestricted, merit-based financial awards as well as other opportunities. History Artadia was founded in San Francisco in 1999 by businessman and art collector Christopher E. Vroom and a group of art collectors and philanthropists who sought to increase financial and professional support for artists. Independent Spirit Award
The Independent Spirit Awards (abbreviated Spirit Awards and originally known as the FINDIE or Friends of Independents Awards), founded in 1984, are awards dedicated to independent filmmakers. Winners were typically presented with acrylic glass pyramids containing suspended shoestrings representing the bare budgets of independent films. Since 2006, winners have received a metal trophy depicting a bird with its wings spread sitting atop of a pole with the shoestrings from the previous design wrapped around the pole. In 1986, the event was renamed the Independent Spirit Awards. Afrofuturism
Afrofuturism is a cultural aesthetic, and philosophy of science and history that explores the intersection of the African diaspora culture with science and technology. It addresses themes and concerns of the African diaspora through technoculture and speculative fiction, encompassing a range of media and artists with a shared interest in envisioning black futures that stem from Afro-diasporic experiences. While Afrofuturism is most commonly associated with science fiction, it can also encompass other speculative genres such as fantasy, alternate history, and magic realism. The term was coined by Mark Dery, an American Cultural critic in 1993 and explored in the late 1990s through conversations led by Alondra Nelson. Ytasha L. Barnsdall Art Park is a city park located in the East Hollywood district of Los Angeles, California. Parking and arts buildings access is from Hollywood Boulevard on the north side of the park. International Film Festival Rotterdam
The International Film Festival Rotterdam (IFFR) is an annual film festival held at the end of January in various locations in Rotterdam, the Netherlands. Since its foundation in 1972, it has maintained a focus on independent and experimental filmmaking by showcasing emerging talents and established auteurs.
