Cattaraugus, New York
Cattaraugus is a village in Cattaraugus County, New York, United States. The population was 996 at the 2020 census. The village lies in the northeast part of the town of New Albion, north of Salamanca. History In 1828, the brothers Calvin and Arad Rich settled in the hills surrounding the area. Cattaraugus developed most after the arrival of the Erie Railroad in 1851. Shortly after, the village became a boomtown growing to 1,500 inhabitants and even being visited by US President Millard Fillmore. By 1860 the township boasted 305 dwellings, 1557 oxen, 383 horses, and 8 school districts with 649 children in school. In the same year, it is well documented Abraham Lincoln had come to visit. Other prominent visitors include US Presidents Teddy Roosevelt and Franklin D. Roosevelt. As well as Mark Twain who then named his housecat “Cattaraugus" The village was incorporated in 1882. Cattaraugus County (locally known as Catt County) is a county in Western New York, with one side bordering Pennsylvania. As of the United States 2020 census, the population was 77,042. The county seat is Little Valley. The county was created in 1808 and later organized in 1817. Cattaraugus County comprises the Olean, NY Micropolitan Statistical Area, which is included in the Buffalo-Cheektowaga-Olean, NY Combined Statistical Area. Within its boundaries are the Allegany Indian Reservation of the Seneca Nation of New York, and the Allegany State Park. The Allegheny River runs through the county. Cattaraugus Reservation is an Indian reservation of the federally recognized Seneca Nation of Indians, formerly part of the Iroquois Confederacy located in New York. As of the 2000 census, the Indian reservation had a total population of 2,412. Its total area is about 34.4 mi² (89.1 km²). Cattaraugus Reservation is an Indian reservation located partly in Cattaraugus County, New York, United States. The population was 314 at the 2010 census. The majority of the residents are of the federally recognized Seneca Nation, one of the original Five Nations of the Iroquois Confederacy. The majority of the reservation is in Erie County and smaller portions are located in Cattaraugus County and Chautauqua County. The main population center in this portion of the reservation is Versailles, which straddles the southern border of the reservation. Geography According to the United States Census Bureau, the Indian reservation has a total area of 6.0 mi2 (15.5 km2). 5.8 mi2 (14.9 km2) of it is land and 0.2 mi2 (0.6 km2) of it (3.68%) is water. Cattaraugus Reservation is an Indian reservation located partly in Erie County, New York, United States. The population was 1,833 at the 2010 census. The largest part of the reservation is in Erie County; smaller portions are located in Cattaraugus County and Chautauqua County. This is one of the reservations of the Seneca Nation of New York. The Seneca maintain most of their administrative and public service facilities for the Cattaraugus Reservation in the Erie County portion. Geography According to the United States Census Bureau, the Indian reservation has a total area of 25.7 mi2 (66.5 km2). 25.3 mi2 (65.6 km2) of it is land and 0.3 mi2 (0.9 km2) of it (1.36%) is water. Canawaugus, New York
Canawaugus (or Conawagus, or Ca-noh-wa-gas, or Conewaugus) () was a Seneca Indian village. The village was located on the west side of the Genesee River, "about a mile above the ford", on the eastern edge of the Town of Caledonia. It was nearly opposite of the Avon sulphur springs. The name (translated as "Cattaraugus" in other Iroquoian languages) means "stinking waters" because of the sulphur. Canawaugus was one of the most populous of the Seneca villages, with a population approaching 1000 people. The Seneca religious leader Handsome Lake was born here about 1735. Governor Blacksnake moved here shortly after his birth. Cornplanter was born here around 1750. It is unclear whether or not the village was destroyed in the Sullivan Expedition of 1779. Canawaugus was one of the 11 reservations retained by the Seneca tribe in the Treaty of Big Tree in 1797. It sold the reservation to the Ogden Land Company in 1826.
