Catholic Church In Palestine
The Catholic Church in Palestine is part of the worldwide Catholic Church, under the spiritual leadership of the Pope in Rome. There are over 80,000 Catholics in Jerusalem and the Palestinian territories (the Gaza Strip and the West Bank), mostly in the agglomeration between Ramallah and Bethlehem, including the West Bank-suburbs of Jerusalem. Adherents are mostly of the Latin Church in the Middle East, Latin Church, but there is also a small community of the Melkite Catholic Patriarchate of Antioch, Melkite Catholic Patriarchate of Antioch and Jerusalem, belonging to the Melkite Catholic Church. Both are in full communion with the Holy See as part of the worldwide Catholic Church. There are two archbishops of Jerusalem, one for each jurisdiction. The Custody of the Holy Land (Latin: ''Custodia Terræ Sanctæ'') is a Custos (Franciscans), custodian priory of the Order of Friars Minor in Jerusalem, founded as the ''Province of the Holy Land'' in 1217 by Saint Francis of Assisi, who had also founded the Franciscans, Franciscan Order in 1209. Deir Rafat ( ar, دير رفات, he, דיר ראפאת), also known as the Shrine of Our Lady Queen of Palestine and of the Holy Land, is a Catholic monastery in central Israel. Located to the north-west of Beit Shemesh, between Givat Shemesh and kibbutz Tzora to the south and Kfar Uria to the north, it falls under the jurisdiction of Mateh Yehuda Regional Council. Pierbattista Pizzaballa (born 21 April 1965) is an Italian prelate of the Catholic Church who has been the Latin Patriarch of Jerusalem since 6 November 2020. A Franciscan friar, he had served as Custos of the Holy Land from 2004 to 2016, and as Apostolic Administrator of the Latin Patriarchate from 2016 to 2020.
