Catherine Osborne, Duchess Of Leeds
Catherine Osborne, Duchess of Leeds (21 January 1764 – 9 October 1837), formerly Catherine Anguish, was the second wife of Francis Osborne, 5th Duke of Leeds. She was the daughter of Thomas Anguish, Esq., a lawyer from Great Yarmouth, whose son Thomas heir to the estates of Sir Thomas Allin, 4th Baronet, of Somerleyton. Her beauty was praised by Lord Sheffield in the "Auckland Correspondence". She married Osborne in 1788, while he was still Marquess of Carmarthen. He had divorced his first wife, Amelia, in 1779. However, his son from his first marriage, George Osborne, would inherit the dukedom. The duke and his second wife had two children: *Lord Sidney Godolphin Osborne (1789-1861), who died unmarried. Francis Osborne, 5th Duke Of Leeds
Francis Godolphin Osborne, 5th Duke of Leeds, (29 January 1751 – 31 January 1799), styled Marquess of Carmarthen until 1789, was a British politician. He notably served as Foreign Secretary under William Pitt the Younger from 1783 to 1791. He also was Governor of Scilly. In 1790, he was made a Knight of the Order of the Garter. As a statesman, he is generally regarded as a failure, and his deep hostility to the newly independent United States damaged relations between the two countries. Background and education Carmarthen was the only surviving son of Thomas Osborne, 4th Duke of Leeds, by his wife, Lady Mary, daughter of Francis Godolphin, 2nd Earl of Godolphin, and Henrietta Godolphin, 2nd Duchess of Marlborough. The mistress of the robes was the senior lady in the Royal Household of the United Kingdom. Formerly responsible for the queen consort's/regnant's clothes and jewellery (as the name implies), the post had the responsibility for arranging the rota of attendance of the ladies-in-waiting on the queen, along with various duties at state ceremonies. In modern times, the mistress of the robes was almost always a duchess. During the 17th and 18th centuries, this role often overlapped with or was replaced as first lady of the bedchamber. In the past, whenever the queen was a queen regnant rather than a queen consort, the mistress of the robes was a political appointment, changing with the government. However, this has not been the case since the death of Queen Victoria in 1901, and Queen Elizabeth II had only had two mistresses of the robes in more than seventy years' reign. There have been two Baronetcies created for persons with the surname Allin, both in the Baronetage of England. Both creations are extinct. The Allin Baronetcy, of Blundeston in the County of Suffolk, was created in the Baronetage of England on 7 February 1673 for the naval commander Sir Thomas Allin. The title became extinct on the death of the second Baronet in 1696. The Allin Baronetcy, of Somerleyton in the County of Suffolk, was created in the Baronetage of England on 14 December 1699 for Richard Allin. He was the son of Edmund Anguish and his wife Alice Allin, he assumed the name and arms of Allin in lieu of that of Anguish upon inheriting the Somerleyton estates on the death, in 1696, of his maternal uncle, Sir Thomas Allin, 2nd Baronet of Blundeston.
