Catherine Alderton
Alderman Mrs. Catherine Buchanan Alderton MBE, JP, CC (1869 – 9 November 1951), was a Cheshire-born British Liberal Party politician and suffragist. She was the first woman elected as Mayoress of Colchester. Background She was the daughter of the Reverend Thomas Robinson, minister of Lion Walk Congregational church from 1886 to 1902. She was educated at Milton Mount College for Girls in Gravesend Kent, an educational institution for the daughters of congregational ministers. She qualified as a secondary-school teacher and taught maths until 1897. She married, in 1897 Archibald William Alderton. They had one son. Politics National political career Alderton joined the Liberal party. She was an active advocate of the campaign to give women the vote for parliamentary elections. Colchester ( ) is a city in Essex, in the East of England. It had a population of 122,000 in 2011. The demonym is Colcestrian. Colchester occupies the site of Camulodunum, the first major city in Roman Britain and its first capital. Colchester therefore claims to be Britain's first city. Margaret Wintringham
Margaret Wintringham (née Longbottom; 4 August 1879 – 10 March 1955) was a British Liberal Party politician. She was the second woman, and the first British-born woman, to take her seat in the House of Commons of the United Kingdom. Early life Margaret Longbottom was born in the hamlet of Oldfield in the West Riding approximately four miles west of Keighley, West Riding of Yorkshire, and educated at Bolton Road School, Silsden where her father was the head teacher, and then Keighley Girls' Grammar School. After training at Bedford Training College, she worked as a teacher, eventually becoming headmistress of a school in Grimsby. In 1903 she married Thomas Wintringham, a timber merchant. They had no children, and Margaret Wintringham became a magistrate and a member of the Grimsby Education Committee. Eleanor Acland
Eleanor Margaret Acland, née Cropper (1878 – 12 December 1933) was a British Liberal Party (UK), Liberal Party politician, suffragist, and novelist. Until 1895 she was known as Eleanor Cropper, from 1895 to 1926 she was known as Eleanor Acland, and from 1926 to her death in 1933 she was known as Lady Acland. She served as president of the Women's Liberal Federation. Background Eleanor Margaret Cropper was born the daughter of Charles James Cropper and Henry Holland, 1st Viscount Knutsford#Family, Hon. Catherine Reeve Hunt
Dame Catherine Reeve Hunt (''née'' Hawkins; 22 December 1854 – 18 October 1948) was an English politician and activist who was mayor of Colchester, Essex, in 1924–25. Hunt was born in 1854, the daughter of Charles Henry Hawkins, of Maitlands, Colchester and Sarah Jane, daughter of John Bawtree, of Abberton, Essex. Her father was mayor of Colchester four times (1848–49, 1865–66, 1870–71, 1871–72). She married Dr Edgar Atlee Hunt, her aunt's widower, in 1896. Hunt and his first wife, Charlotte Mary Bawtree, were the grandparents of actress Elizabeth Inglis and great-grandparents of American actress Sigourney Weaver. Essex County Hospital
The Essex County Hospital Center, also known as the Overbrook Hospital, the Overbrook Asylum, or simply the Overbrook, was a psychiatric hospital that was located around 125 Fairview Avenue in the Township of Cedar Grove, New Jersey. It was used as a Hospital#Types, general hospital then converted to house patients afflicted with mental disorders. An alderman is a member of a Municipal government, municipal assembly or council in many Jurisdiction, jurisdictions founded upon English law.
