Cathedral Hill, San Francisco
Cathedral Hill is a neighborhood and a hill, in the Western Addition district of San Francisco, California. Location The neighbourhood's northern border is Post Street, the eastern border is Van Ness Avenue, the southern border is Eddy Street and the western border is Laguna Street. Attractions and characteristics The neighborhood is centered on St. Mary's Cathedral on the corner of Geary Street and Gough Street. It is home to large condominium and apartment towers, plus numerous churches built atop the hill, including St. Mary's Cathedral, St. Mark's Lutheran Church, The First Unitarian Church of San Francisco, and the Hamilton Baptist Church. The neighborhood's former Cathedral Hill Hotel at Van Ness and Geary Streets was torn down and replaced by a new earthquake-proof California Pacific Medical Center hospital between 2013 and 2021. Yahoo! Groups was a free-to-use system of electronic mailing lists offered by Yahoo!. Prior to February 2020, Yahoo! Groups was one of the world's largest collections of online discussion boards. This is a list of the hills of San Francisco, California. Prior lists Several cities claim to have been built on seven hills. "The Seven Hills of San Francisco" are Telegraph Hill, Nob Hill, Russian Hill, Rincon Hill, Twin Peaks, Mount Davidson and Lone Mountain or Mount Sutro. The origin of most longer lists of San Francisco hills is ''Hills of San Francisco'', a compilation of 42 ''San Francisco Chronicle'' columns, each describing one of the city's hills. The "Hills" chapter of Gladys Hansen's ''San Francisco Almanac'' repeated the list given in ''Hills of San Francisco'' and added the then-recently-named Cathedral Hill for a total of 43, but the "Places" chapter listed many additional hills. Sacred Heart Cathedral Prep
Sacred Heart Cathedral Preparatory, commonly known as SHC or SH, is a Catholic school located in the Cathedral Hill neighborhood of San Francisco, California. Founded in 1852, Sacred Heart Cathedral is the oldest Catholic secondary school and was the first co-ed Catholic high school in San Francisco. SHC is owned by the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of San Francisco. History Sacred Heart Cathedral Preparatory was formed by a merger between two single-sex schools — St. Vincent's and Sacred Heart High School. St. Vincent's was founded in 1852 as an orphanage and a girls' day school by five sisters of the Daughters of Charity. In 1868, the Christian Brothers would open St. Peter’s Parochial School, which would eventually be renamed to Sacred Heart High School, to accommodate the growing elementary-aged population. Geary Street
Geary Boulevard (designated as Geary Street east of Van Ness Avenue) is a major east–west thoroughfare in San Francisco, California, United States, beginning downtown at Market Street near Market Street's intersection with Kearny Street, and running westbound through downtown, the Civic Center area, the Western Addition, and running for most of its length through the predominantly residential Richmond District. Geary Boulevard terminates near Sutro Heights Park at 48th Avenue, close to the Cliff House above Ocean Beach at the Pacific Ocean. Van Ness Avenue is a north–south thoroughfare in San Francisco, California. Originally named Marlette Street, the street was renamed Van Ness Avenue in honor of the city's sixth mayor, James Van Ness. The main part of Van Ness Avenue runs from Market Street near the Civic Center north to Bay Street at Fort Mason. South Van Ness Avenue is the portion of Van Ness south of Market Street, continuing through the city's South of Market and Mission districts to end at Cesar Chavez Street. The Western Addition is a district in San Francisco, California, United States. Location The Western Addition is located between Van Ness Avenue, the Richmond District, the Haight-Ashbury and Lower Haight neighborhoods, and Pacific Heights. Today, the term Western Addition is generally used in two ways: to denote either the development's original geographic area or the eastern portion of the neighborhood (also called the Fillmore District) that was redeveloped in the 1950s.
