Catharina Both-van Der Eem
''Catharina Both van der Eem'' is a painting by the Dutch Golden Age painter Frans Hals, painted in 1620 and now in Louvre Museum. It is considered a pendant portrait to the ''Portrait of Paulus van Beresteyn'', in the same museum. Painting Similar to Hals' '' Portrait of a Woman Standing'' in Chatsworth House, this woman is wearing a wedding ring on her right forefinger, a figure-eight collar and lace wrist collars with gold bracelets. Her bodice is a richly embroidered Dutch wedding stomacher, and a heavy gold chain draped through a vlieger, rests on a wheel-shaped fardegalijn. Her diadem cap lacks wings and is more similar to the cap worn by Hals's unknown sitter ''Portrait of a Woman Standing'' (Kassel) and by his brewer Aletta Hannemans. Her portrait was documented by Hofstede de Groot in 1910, who wrote:155. CATHARINA BOTH VAN DER EEM, wife of Paulus Beresteyn. B. 10; M. 16. Three-quarter-length, life size. She is turned three-quarters left. She wears a lace cap, and a r ...

Hofje Van Beresteyn
The Hofje van Codde en Beresteyn is a hofje in Haarlem, Netherlands. The current building is from 1968 and is located on the J. Cuyperstraat, which is named for the architect who designed the Cathedral of Saint Bavo next door, Joseph Cuypers. This hofje is the wealthiest hofje foundation in Haarlem with the most modern facilities for its inhabitants. Poor (devote) Catholic women of Haarlem 60 years and older are still welcome to live there for free. History of the Hofje van Codde The modern-day Hofje van Codde en Berestijn was built in 1968 on land next to the Cathedral of Saint Bavo, because the original donator, Pieter Jansz Codde, was Catholic and built his hofje next to the former cathedral in Haarlem, the Sint-Bavokerk on the Grote markt in the center of town. This location is the second move that the hofje made in its history spanning four centuries. The Haarlem archives still keep the will and testament of the original donor, where it states that Mr. Pieter Jansz Codde, c ...

Portraits By Frans Hals
A portrait is a painting, photograph, sculpture, or other artistic representation of a person, in which the face and its expressions are predominant. The intent is to display the likeness, personality, and even the mood of the person. For this reason, in photography a portrait is generally not a snapshot, but a composed image of a person in a still position. A portrait often shows a person looking directly at the painter or photographer, in order to most successfully engage the subject with the viewer. History Prehistorical portraiture Plastered human skulls were reconstructed human skulls that were made in the ancient Levant between 9000 and 6000 BC in the Pre-Pottery Neolithic B period. They represent some of the oldest forms of art in the Middle East and demonstrate that the prehistoric population took great care in burying their ancestors below their homes. The skulls denote some of the earliest sculptural examples of portraiture in the history of art. Historical portraitu ...

Aletta Hannemans
Aletta Hanemans (1606–1653), was a Dutch brewer. She became the brewer of the ''Hoeffijser'' in Haarlem. She is best known today for her marriage portrait by Frans Hals, painted when she married the brewer, magistrate, and later mayor of Haarlem, Jacob Pietersz Olycan in 1624. Biography Little is known of her early life, but her father was probably a professional acquaintance of her husband's father Pieter Jacobsz Olycan, who had grown up in his father's oil and grain shop in Amsterdam. Though she married Jacob in Zwolle, the young couple was back in Haarlem in 1625, when Hals painted their pendant portraits. Their brewery called the ''Hoeffijser'' or ''Hoef-yzer'' was located on the Donkere Spaarne (near the Teylers Hofje today). Lof der stad Haarlem by Samuel Ampzing It had been given to Jacob by his parents, after he had spent his youth in training there. After Jacob died in 1638, Aletta remarried another Haarlem brewer, Nicolaes van Loo (1607-1641), but he died soon after ...
