Castleton Spartans Football
The Castleton Spartans football team represents Castleton University in college football at the NCAA Division III level. The Spartans are members of the Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference (MASCAC), fielding its team in the MASCAC since 2024. The Spartans play their home games at Dave Wolk Stadium in Castleton, Vermont. Their head coach is Tony Volpone, who took over the position for the 2014 season. Anthony M. Volpone (born ) is an American college football coach. He is the head football coach for Castleton University, a position he has held since 2014. He also coached for Nichols Bison football, Nichols, Pine Crest School, Bridgewater Eagles football, Bridgewater, Norwich Cadets football, Norwich, Becker Hawks football, Becker, Endicott Gulls football, Endicott. The 2017 NCAA Division III football season was the portion of the 2017 college football season organized by the NCAA at the Division III level in the United States. Under Division III rules, teams were eligible to begin play on August 31, 2017. The season ended with the NCAA Division III Football Championship, also known as the Stagg Bowl, on December 15, 2017, at Salem Football Stadium in Salem, Virginia. The 2016 NCAA Division III football season, part of the college football season organized by the NCAA at the Division III level in the United States, began on September 5, 2016 and ended with the NCAA Division III Football Championship, also known as the Stagg Bowl, on December 16, 2016 at Salem Football Stadium in Salem, Virginia. However, UMHB's championship was later vacated by the NCAA. Conference changes and new programs Three programs changed conference affiliations. The 2015 NCAA Division III football season, part of the college football season organized by the NCAA at the Division III level in the United States, began on September 5, 2015 and concluded with the NCAA Division III Football Championship, also known as the Stagg Bowl, on December 18, 2015 at Salem Football Stadium in Salem, Virginia. Mount Union, which made its 11th consecutive appearance in the title game, defeated St. Thomas (Minnesota) 49–35 to claim its 19th national title.
