Castlebar Mitchels GAA
Castlebar Mitchels is a Gaelic Athletic Association club based in the Castlebar area in County Mayo, Ireland. The club was founded in 1885 and is named after the nationalist John Mitchel (1815–1875). Though football is the club's dominant sport, hurling is also played. The club's name is a source of controversy, due to Mitchel's racism, advocacy of slavery and support for the Confederate States of America. MacHale Park
MacHale Park () is a GAA stadium in Castlebar, County Mayo, Ireland. It is the home of the Castlebar Mitchels GAA and Mayo GAA Gaelic football teams. Built in 1931, as of 2022 the ground has a capacity of approximately 28,000 and is named after John MacHale, Catholic Archbishop of Tuam from 1831 to 1881. It is the twelfth-biggest sports stadium in the Republic of Ireland by capacity and the second-biggest in the province of Connacht after Pearse Stadium in Galway; which is the home of Galway GAA. History Discussions with the owners of the land where MacHale Park now stands commenced in 1929 and the deal was concluded on 7 March 1930. In early 1931, development of the pitch took place at a cost of IR£1,700. 2016 Mayo Senior Football Championship
The 2016 Mayo Senior Football Championship was the 115th edition of the Mayo GAA's premier gaelic football tournament for senior clubs in County Mayo, Ireland. Sixteen teams compete with the winner representing Mayo in the Connacht Senior Club Football Championship. The championship starts with a group stage and progresses to a knock out stage. The winners receive the Paddy Moclair Cup. Castlebar Mitchels were the defending champions after they defeated rivals Breaffy in the 2015 final. They successfully defended their title to claim a "2-in-a-row" and their 30th overall when they defeated Knockmore 3-13 to 0-10 in McHale Park on 29 October 2016. Donal Vaughan
Donal Vaughan is a Gaelic footballer who played inter county football with Mayo. He plays club football for Castlebar Mitchels since 2017 after leaving Ballinrobe. Playing career Vaughan started at centre back in two All-Ireland SFC finals: the 2012 decider, which Mayo lost by 0-13 to 2-11 against Donegal and the 2013 decider, which Mayo lost by 1-14 to 2-12 against. He was sent off in the 2017 All-Ireland Senior Football Championship Final after a reckless charge at John Small of Dublin after a free was awarded and Small was shown his second yellow of the match. Éamonn Mongey
Éamonn Mongey (1925 – 23 September 2007) was an Irish Gaelic footballer who played as a midfielder and as a centre-back at senior level for the Mayo county team. A native of Castlebar, Mongey's family was steeped in the GAA. His father was president, vice-president and secretary of Castlebar Mitchels on different occasions in the early part of the last century, and his brother Finn was also county secretary for a period. He won an interprovincial colleges championship in 1942, and at the age of 16 had his first outing for the Mayo senior team against Roscommon in a Connacht league that replaced the National League which had been suspended because of the War. He remained a regular member of the starting fifteen until his retirement following the conclusion of the 1955 championship. John Maughan
John Maughan (born 1962) is an Irish Gaelic football manager and former player who most recently managed the Offaly football team. He is a former manager of the Mayo, Clare, Roscommon and Fermanagh senior football teams. He is only the third man to lead five different counties and the first to complete a "slam", with at least one of these counties coming from each of Ireland's four provinces. Early life Maughan is originally from Crossmolina. He comes from a family of six children. He was the only one sent to boarding school, which he attended at Moate's Carmelite College. Henry Kenny
Henry Frances Kenny (7 September 1913 – 25 September 1975) was an Irish Fine Gael politician who served as Minister of State at the Department of Finance from 1973 to 1975. He served as a Teachta Dála (TD) from 1954 to 1975. He was the father of former Taoiseach Enda Kenny. He was also a Gaelic footballer who won an All-Ireland Senior Football Championship medal with the Mayo county team in 1936. Early life Kenny was born on Main Street, Castlebar, County Mayo, in 1913. Patsy Flannelly
Patrick Martin "Patsy" Flannelly (7 November 1909 – 14 October 1939) was an Irish Gaelic footballer who played as a midfielder at senior level for the Mayo county team. Flannelly joined the team during the 1932 championship and was a regular member of the starting fifteen until his death following the conclusion of the 1939 championship. Richie Feeney
Richie Feeney is a former Gaelic footballer who played for the Mayo county team. A Right half back in the Mayo senior team, Feeney began playing with Castlebar Mitchels. He is the brother of fellow-player Alan Feeney, He is a son of the late Ger Feeney, who won a minor All-Ireland in 1971 and an Under 21 title three years later. Neil Douglas
Lieutenant-General Sir Neil Douglas (1779 – 1 September 1853) was a British Army officer who fought at the 1815 Battle of Waterloo and later became Commander-in-Chief, Scotland. Life He was born in Glasgow the fifth son of John Douglas a merchant and descendant of the Earls of Angus. Douglas was commissioned as a Second Lieutenant into the 95th Regiment of Foot on 28 January 1801. Promoted to captain in the 79th Regiment of Foot on 19 April 1804, he took part in the Battle of Copenhagen in August 1807, the Battle of Corunna in January 1809 and Battle of Bussaco in September 1810 during the Napoleonic Wars. In the last he was almost killed, being found on the battlefield with seven bayonet wounds but nevertheless surviving. In May 1813 he took command of the whole regiment in place of Lt Col Fulton. Paddy Durcan (born 1994) is a Gaelic footballer who plays for Castlebar Mitchels and at senior level for the Mayo county team.
