The Castle of Terena is a castle in the freguesia, civil parish of Terena (Alandroal), Terena in the concelho, municipality of Alandroal Municipality, Alandroal in the Portugal, Portuguese subregion of Alentejo Central. Since 1946, it has been listed as a National monuments of Portugal, National monument. History The origins of the castle are found in the period of the early Middle Ages, specifically in the 13th century, a period in which the high Guadiana River, Guadiana was a frontier territory with Castile. The earliest registers indicated that a foral was passed by royal knight Gil Martins and his wife, D. Maria João in 1262. It is unclear whether, after this charter, the construction of the structure was begun. Owing to the interest of King Denis of Portugal, Denis to consolidate his kingdom's frontiers, the castle was part of a course of fortresses that included Castle of Elvas, Castle of Juromenha and Castle of Alandroal. Alandroal Municipality
Alandroal () is a municipality in the Portuguese district of Évora located on the eastern frontier with Spain along the right margin of the Guadiana River in the Central Alentejo region. It is located above sea level, northeast of Évora and southeast of Estremoz. The population in 2011 was 5,843, in an area of 542.68 km². History With the completion of the castle in 1298, by Lourenço Afonso (9th Master of the Order of Aviz), the noble fulfilled his obligation to King Denis of Portugal to expand the territory that would form Alandroal.
