Castle Doyle, New South Wales
Castle Doyle is a locality in the Armidale Regional Council region of New South Wales, Australia. It is bounded by Commissioners Waters to the north and the Gara River to the east. It had a population of 164 as of the . Castle Doyle Post Office opened on 16 October 1884. It was downgraded to a receiving office from 1 January 1887 until being upgraded again on 1 July 1947. It closed on 30 November 1959. Castle Doyle Public School operated from 1882 to 1886, 1898 to 1908, 1912 to 1921 and from 1929 until its final closure in 1933. Armidale, New South Wales
Armidale is a city in the Northern Tablelands, New South Wales, Australia. Armidale had a population of 24,504 as of June 2018. Estimated resident population, 30 June 2018. It is the administrative centre for the Northern Tablelands region. It is approximately halfway between Sydney and Brisbane at the junction of the New England Highway and Waterfall Way. Geography Armidale is on the banks of Dumaresq Creek, in the Northern Tablelands in the New England region about midway between Sydney and Brisbane at an altitude (980 m AHD) ranging from 970 metres at the valley's floor to 1,110 metres above sea level at the crests of the hills. A short distance to the east of Armidale are heavily forested steep gorges dropping down to the eastern coastal plain. It is currently held by Adam Marshall representing the National Party, following a by-election triggered by the resignation of independent member Richard Torbay. The Division of New England is an Australian electoral division in the state of New South Wales. History The division was proclaimed in 1900, and was one of the original 65 divisions to be contested at the first federal election. It is named after the New England region in northern New South Wales. From 1922 to 2001, New England was usually regarded as a comfortably safe seat for the National Party, formerly the Country Party. Only one Labor candidate has ever won the seat – Frank Foster at the 1906 election and again at the 1910 election, both times on small margins. Since then, the closest Labor has come to winning the seat was in the 1943 landslide, when the Country majority was pared back to an extremely marginal 1.1 percent. Armidale Regional Council
The Armidale Region is a local government area in the New England and Northern Tablelands regions of New South Wales, Australia. This area was formed in 2016 from the merger of the Armidale Dumaresq Shire with the surrounding Guyra Shire. The combined area covered the urban area of Armidale and the surrounding region, extending primarily eastward from the city through farming districts to the gorges and escarpments that mark the edge of the Northern Tablelands. Commissioners Waters
The Commissioners Waters, a watercourse that is part of the Macleay River catchment, is located in the Northern Tablelands region of New South Wales, Australia. Course and features Commissioners Waters was formed by the confluence of the Dumaresq Creek and Tilbuster Ponds. Commissioners Waters is located about east of Armidale. The river flows generally to the southeast by south, joined by a minor tributary, before reaching its confluence with the Gara River. The river descends over its course. The river is traversed by the Waterfall Way, and is named in honour of Commissioner McDonald, the first Commissioner of Crown Lands in Armidale. Gara River, a perennial river that is a tributary of the Macleay River, is located in the Northern Tablelands region of New South Wales, Australia. Course and features The river rises at the junction of the southern slopes of the Great Dividing Range and the Ben Lomond Range, near Llangothlin, and flows generally south and southeast, joined by four minor tributaries, until the river reaches a junction with Salisbury Waters within Oxley Wild Rivers National Park and descends to its confluence with the Macleay River, below Blue Nobby Mountain, south east of Armidale. The river descends over its course and is impounded by Guyra Dam and Malpas Reservoir. In its lower reaches, the Gara River is transversed by the Waterfall Way. Gara River Hydro-Electric Scheme is a heritage-listed former hydroelectric power station located at Castle Doyle, Armidale Regional Council, New South Wales, Australia. It was designed by Richard Threlfall and built from 1893 to 1895 by Crompton Power Company. The property is owned by the State Government's Office of Environment and Heritage. It was added to the New South Wales State Heritage Register on 2 April 1999. History The Gara River scheme was the first substantial hydro-electric scheme to reach fruition in Australia. It began to generate power in March 1895 to light the town of Hillgrove, near Armidale in the New South Wales Central Tablelands. The scheme was instigated by the Australasian Rights Purchase Association, when they placed a petition for a bill before the Parliament of New South Wales, requesting the water rights to exploit the Gara River for the purposes of power generation.
