Castelo De Paiva Municipality
Castelo de Paiva () is a town and a municipality of the Aveiro District in Portugal. The population in 2011 was 16,733, in an area of 115.01 km2. On 4 March 2001 at 9 pm, a 116-year-old metal bridge linking the parish/council of Sobrado (a.k.a. Castelo de Paiva) and Entre-os-Rios (a bridge connecting Castelo de Paiva to Penafiel) collapsed, killing 59 people, including those in a bus from the Asadouro company and three cars that were attempting to get to the other side of the Douro river. The Hintze Ribeiro Bridge disaster prompted accusations of government negligence, and the Public Works minister Jorge Coelho resigned shortly after the disaster. There is a monument near the bridge in honour of the people who died, known as the "Anjo de Portugal" (The Angel of Portugal). The Mayor is Gonçalo Rocha, elected by the Socialist Party (PS). Saint John's Eve, starting at sunset on 23 June, is the eve of celebration before the Feast Day of Saint John the Baptist. Marco André Rocha Pereira (born 12 January 1987), known simply as Marco, is a Portuguese professional footballer who plays for C.D. Santa Clara as a goalkeeper. Club career Born in Castelo de Paiva, Aveiro District, Marco came through the ranks at Boavista F.C. before moving to C.D. Trofense, initially on loan. Sérgio Fernando da Silva Rodrigues (born 12 October 1985), commonly known as Serginho, is a Portuguese footballer who plays as a left back for Lusitânia FC. Pedro Filipe Gomes Soares (born 15 February 1979) is a Portuguese mathematician and politician of the Left Bloc. Born in Castelo de Paiva, Aveiro District, he graduated in Applied Mathematics from the University of Porto, and has a master's degree in remote sensing. In 2001, aged 22, he ran for a city council seat, and four years later he was second on his party's electoral list in the district for the legislative elections. In 2009, Soares became the first Left Bloc politician elected to the Assembly of the Republic by the Aveiro District, and was re-elected in 2011. On 6 December 2012, he was voted the party's parliamentary leader. José Carlos de Araújo Nunes (born 7 March 1977) is a Portuguese former footballer who played as a centre back. Anthony of Padua ( it, Antonio di Padova) or Anthony of Lisbon ( pt, António/Antônio de Lisboa; born Fernando Martins de Bulhões; 15 August 1195 – 13 June 1231) was a Portuguese people, Portuguese Catholic Church, Catholic priesthood (Catholic Church), priest and friar of the Franciscan Order. Paiva River
The Paiva River () is a river that rises in the Sierra de Leomil, more specifically in the parish of Pêra Velha, Aldeia de Nacomba e Ariz - belonging to the municipality of Moimenta da Beira - and flows into the Douro, in Castelo de Paiva, flowing through the parish of Fornos on the left bank. On the right bank, it flows through the parish of Souselo, Cinfães. It is classified as a Site of Community Importance in the Natura 2000 Network. Hintze Ribeiro Disaster
At about 21:00 on the night of 4 March 2001, the Hintze Ribeiro disaster (also known as Entre-os-Rios disaster) occurred when the steel and concrete Hintze Ribeiro Bridge collapsed in Entre-os-Rios, Castelo de Paiva, northern Portugal, killing 59 people, including those in a bus from the Asadouro company and three cars that were crossing the Douro river. Fast waters and a storm at the time gave no chance for an immediate rescue, and the victims drowned. The strong river current carried bodies downstream more than to the Atlantic ocean.
