Cassie Mitchell
Cassie Mitchell (born June 8, 1981) is an American engineer and Paralympic cyclist and track and field athlete. Early life Mitchell was born in Muskogee, Oklahoma, and graduated from high school in Warner in 1999 as valedictorian of her class; shortly thereafter, she developed neuromyelitis optica, which left her paralyzed from the chest down with limited movement of her arms and hands and with permanent double vision. In 2004, she graduated from Oklahoma State University with a BS degree in chemical engineering. She later earned a PhD in biomedical engineering from both Emory and Georgia Tech universities. Academic career Currently, she is a research professor at Wallace H. Coulter Department of Biomedical Engineering at both universities. Muskogee, Oklahoma
Muskogee () is the thirteenth-largest city in Oklahoma and the county seat of Muskogee County. Home to Bacone College, it lies approximately southeast of Tulsa. The population of the city was 36,878 as of the 2020 census, a 6.0 percent decrease from 39,223 in 2010. History French fur traders were believed to have established a temporary village near the future Muskogee in 1806, but the first permanent European-American settlement was established in 1817 on the south bank of the Verdigris River, north of present-day Muskogee. After the passage of the Indian Removal Act of 1830 under President Andrew Jackson, the Muscogee Creek Indians were one of the "Five Civilized Tribes" forced out of the American Southeast to Indian Territory. 2013 IPC Athletics World Championships
The 2013 IPC Athletics World Championships was the biggest track and field competition for athletes with a disability since the 2012 Summer Paralympics. It was held in Lyon, France, and lasted from 20 to 28 July. Around 1,100 athletes competed, from 94 different countries. The event was held in the Stade du Rhône located at the Parc de Parilly in Vénissieux, in Lyon Metropolis. Venue The Championship was staged at the Stade du Rhône in the Parc de Parilly. The stadium, previously known as the Stade Parilly, was refurbished in 2012 and officially reopened and renamed on 3 September 2012. Double Vision
Diplopia is the simultaneous perception of two images of a single object that may be displaced horizontally or vertically in relation to each other. Also called double vision, it is a loss of visual focus under regular conditions, and is often voluntary. However, when occurring involuntarily, it results in impaired function of the extraocular muscles, where both eyes are still functional, but they cannot turn to target the desired object. Neuromyelitis Optica
Neuromyelitis optica spectrum disorders (NMOSD), including neuromyelitis optica (NMO), are autoimmune diseases characterized by acute inflammation of the optic nerve (optic neuritis, ON) and the spinal cord (myelitis). Episodes of ON and myelitis can be simultaneous or successive. A relapsing disease course is common, especially in untreated patients. The Parapan American Games is an international multi-sport event for athletes with physical disabilities held every four years after every Pan American Games. The first Games were held in 1999 in Mexico City, Mexico. The 2003 Parapan American Games was the last Parapan American Games that was not held in the same city as the Pan American Games.
