United States Women's National Volleyball Team
The United States women's national volleyball team participates in international volleyball competitions and friendly games, and is governed by USA Volleyball. The current head coach is three-time Olympic gold medalist and retired dominant beach volleyball professional Karch Kiraly. Before 2014, the United States women's national volleyball team had achieved second place six times in major competitions (1967 World Women's Volleyball Championship, 1984 Los Angeles Olympic Games, 2002 World Women's Volleyball Championship, 2008 Beijing Olympic Games, 2011 World Cup, 2012 London Olympic Games) but had never reached the top. Volleyball
Volleyball is a team sport in which two teams of six players are separated by a net. Each team tries to score points by grounding a ball on the other team's court under organized rules. It has been a part of the official program of the Summer Olympic Games since Tokyo 1964. Beach volleyball was introduced to the programme at the Atlanta 1996. The adapted version of volleyball at the Summer Paralympic Games is sitting volleyball. The complete set of rules is extensive, but play essentially proceeds as follows: a player on one of the teams begins a 'rally' by serving the ball (tossing or releasing it and then hitting it with a hand or arm), from behind the back boundary line of the court, over the net, and into the receiving team's court. The receiving team must not let the ball be grounded within their court. Volleyball At The 2007 Pan American Games – Women's Tournament
The volleyball competitions at the 2007 Pan American Games were held from 14 to 19 July for the women and from 23 to 28 July for the men. The competitions were held at Ginásio do Maracanãzinho, located near the Estádio do Maracanã. Competition format In both the men's and the women's competition eight teams participated of the tournament. The teams were divided in two groups of four teams each. The teams played against each other once within their groups. The two best placed teams of each group advanced to the semifinals. The teams which finished in the third and fourth place of their groups competed for the fifth and seventh places, playing the third-placed team of a group against the fourth-placed team of the other group. The winners competed for the fifth place and the losers competed for the seventh place. The semifinal winners competed for the gold medal while the losers competed for the bronze medal.
