Casco is a town in Cumberland County, Maine, United States. The population was 3,646 at the 2020 census. Casco includes the villages of Casco, South Casco and Cook Mills. The town borders the east shore of Sebago Lake, and is home to part of Sebago Lake State Park. Casco is part of the Portland– South Portland–Biddeford, Maine metropolitan statistical area. Casco is just under from downtown Portland. Casco is the home of "Casco Days", an annual community fair which takes place in Casco Days Park, always on the last Saturday in July. Casco Art Institute: Working for the Commons is a non-profit public art institution based in Utrecht, Netherlands. Overview Casco was founded in 1990 as an experimental art space on the Oudegracht in Utrecht. In 1995 it was renamed Casco Projects, starting a program with a focus on autonomy and intervention. In 2003, Casco took a new title 'Office for Art, Design and Theory' to expand its framework to artistic research and interdisciplinary practices. ''Cascos'' are flat-bottomed square-ended barges from the Philippines. They were used mostly to carry cargo along lakes and rivers, and as lighters to transport goods to and from moored ships. Though they resemble the Chinese sampan, they are much larger with two detachable masts with junk rigs made of woven fiber. They also possess outrigger-like platforms along the entire length of the sides, which is used by punters with barge poles when traversing shallow water. They were steered by an oar or a central rudder by a helmsman housed in a small raised platform at the stern. The entire deck is covered almost entirely in removable curving or pitched panels. The third USS ''Casco'' (AVP-12) was a United States Navy ''Barnegat''-class small seaplane tender in commission from 1941 to 1947. She saw service in World War II.
