Carver, Richmond, Virginia
Carver is a neighborhood near the Virginia Commonwealth University campus in Richmond, Virginia, and straddles alongside the border between Downtown Richmond and North Side. The neighborhood is in the process of gentrification and is heavily inhabited with students attending Virginia Commonwealth and Virginia Union universities due to the two school's proximities to the neighborhood. The main roads through the neighborhood are West Leigh Street (Virginia Route 33) as well as Clay and Marshall Streets. The neighborhood is primarily residential, though it is home to several scrap metal yards and restaurants. Virginia Commonwealth University
Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU) is a public research university in Richmond, Virginia. VCU was founded in 1838 as the medical department of Hampden–Sydney College, becoming the Medical College of Virginia in 1854. The Richmond Arts and Culture District stretches from the Institute for Contemporary Art on West Broad to the Virginia State Capitol and spans the Monroe Ward and Jackson Ward neighborhoods. Jackson Ward
Jackson Ward is a historically African-American district in Richmond, Virginia with a long tradition of African-American businesses. It is located less than a mile from the Virginia State Capitol, sitting to the west of Court End and north of Broad Street (Richmond, Virginia), Broad Street. Gilpin, Richmond
Gilpin is a small neighborhood located in Richmond, Virginia and within the boundaries of the North Side of the city limits. Originally part and parcel of the historically Black neighborhood of Jackson Ward, the northern section of that neighborhood was heavily redeveloped with the provision of public housing from the mid-20th century onwards, with the major development taking the name "Gilpin Court". During the same period, a massive expansion of highway building around and through central Richmond saw the Gilpin Court and the rest of the neighborhood essentially cut off from the rest of Jackson Ward. Chamberlayne Industrial Center
The Chamberlayne Industrial Center, sometimes simply known as Chamberlayne is a heavy industry district within the boundaries of Richmond, Virginia's North Side region. The neighborhood contains a mixture of residential, commercial industrial-zoned areas, but most of the residential and commercial buildings are in the eastern corner of the neighborhood. The neighborhood is named after Chamberlayne Avenue (U.S. Route 1) which serves as the spine for the neighborhood. State Route 33 (SR 33) is a primary state highway in the U.S. state of Virginia. The state highway runs from U.S. Route 33 and US 250 in Richmond, Virginia east to Chesapeake Boulevard in Stingray Point. SR 33 is a state-numbered eastward extension of US 33 that connects Richmond with West Point and the Middle Peninsula, one of three large peninsulas on the west side of the Chesapeake Bay in Virginia. Virginia Union University
Virginia Union University is a private historically black Baptist university in Richmond, Virginia. It is affiliated with the American Baptist Churches USA. History The American Baptist Home Mission Society (ABHMS) founded the school as Richmond Theological Institute in 1865 shortly after Union troops took control of Richmond, Virginia, at the end of the American Civil War, for African-American freedmen to enter into the ministry. The college had the first academic library at an HBCU, building the library in 1865 the same year the college was established. Its mission was soon expanded to offer courses and programs at college, high school, and preparatory levels, to both men and women. This effort was the beginning of Virginia Union University. The Northside is an area composed of northern Richmond, Virginia and some parts of Henrico County, Virginia.
