Carty
Carty or Carthy is a surname likely to have originated from the Irish name Ó Cárthaigh (Connacht and , ; anglicised as O'Coraic). It took its current form ''Carty'' during later historical events when many Gaelic Irish names were anglicised. It has been speculated that some Irish immigrants to America and/or their descendants added ''Mc'', changing their names to McCarty in the incorrect belief that they were returning the name back to its original form. The Carty name originates from the south of the island of Ireland Wexford and could have been a subclan of the much larger McCarthy clan, and a member of the Clan Eoghanachta. It has been recorded that the Carty clan was a scattered sept or clan in pre Norman Ireland which may have resulted from an event such as having come off the wrong end of a tribal dispute. Ricardo Adolfo Jacobo Carty (born September 1, 1939), nicknamed "Beeg Boy", is a Dominican former professional baseball player. He played in Major League Baseball as an outfielder from 1963 to 1979, most prominently as a member of the Atlanta Braves where he helped the franchise win its first National League Western Division title in . Carty had a career batting average of .299 and, was the 1970 National League (NL) batting champion with a .366 batting average. He earned his starting role in the 1970 All-Star Game as a write-in candidate. Carty also played for the Chicago Cubs, Oakland Athletics, Cleveland Indians, Toronto Blue Jays and Texas Rangers. He was one of the earliest Dominicans to play in the major leagues however, his career was marked by battles with injuries, illnesses (tuberculosis) and teammates.

MacCarthy ( ga, Mac Cárthaigh), also spelled Macarthy, McCarthy or McCarty, is an Irish clan originating from Munster, an area they ruled during the Middle Ages. Francis Joseph Carty (3 April 1897 – 10 September 1942) was a leader of the Irish Republican Army (IRA) in the Irish War of Independence, and a long-serving Fianna Fáil Teachta Dála (TD). Early life He was born on 3 April 1897 in Clooncunny, County Sligo, the only son of John Carty and Ellen Carty (née Rice). Prison escapes and attempts Carty's first escape from confinement came on 26 June 1920, when he was rescued from Sligo Gaol. On 15 February 1921, Carty next escaped from Derry Gaol. The rescue party was led by Charles McGuinness. Carty was taken from the city in a coal boat, the Carricklee by the first mate Oskar Norrby, a Swede. Following recapture, Frank Carty was later involved in an incident in Glasgow, Scotland when on 4 May 1921, members of the IRA attempted to free him from a prison van in a failed escape attempt. Mother Mary Praxedes Carty (born Susan 1854 - December 16, 1933) was an Irish American educator and member of the Roman Catholic order of the Sisters of Loretto. Mother Praxedes worked throughout the Southwestern and Western areas of the United States building and improving churches and schools. John Carty is an Irish musician. Considered by many as one of Ireland’s best traditional musicians, Carty plays fiddle, tenor banjo, tenor guitar and occasionally the flute. He is very interested in the North Connacht traditional music style. Carty was born in London and now lives in Boyle, County Roscommon. His first fiddle album, ''Last Night's Fun'', which released on Shanachie Records in 1996 has been described as a milestone in recorded fiddle music. John Carty (Irish Politician)
John Carty (12 August 1950 – 30 January 2014) was an Irish Fianna Fáil politician. He served as a Teachta Dála (TD) from 2002 to 2007 and as a Senator from 2007 to 2011. From Knock, County Mayo, Carty was elected at the 1999 local elections as a member of Mayo County Council for the Claremorris electoral area. At the 2002 general election, he was elected to Dáil Éireann for the Mayo constituency.
