Nathaniel Cartmell
Nathaniel John Cartmell (January 13, 1883 – August 23, 1967), also known as Nat and Nate, was an American Athletics (sport), athlete who won medals at two editions of the Olympic Games. Importantly, Nate was on first racially integrated Athletics at the 1908 Summer Olympics – Men's medley relay, Men's Medley relay team that won Olympic gold medal at the 1908 Summer Olympics, 1908 London Olympics, which Nate helped form and featured Nate's fellow University of Pennsylvania alumnus and former teammate, Dr. John Taylor (athlete), John Baxter Taylor Jr., the first black athlete in America to win a gold medal in the Olympics. Jack Cartmell
John Range Cartmell (28 August 1890 – 23 February 1979) was a professional footballer who played in the Football League for Brentford and Gillingham as an outside left. He later became trainer at Brentford and served nearly 30 years in the role. He was posthumously inducted into the Brentford Hall of Fame in May 2015. Playing career An outside left, Cartmell began his career with spells at Huddersfield Town, Blackpool, Mardy and Abertillery, before the outbreak of the First World War in 1914 saw the suspension of competitive football the following year. Cartmell guested for Heart of Midlothian during the war and made 23 appearances, scoring two goals. After the armistice, Cartmell joined Southern League First Division club Brentford in 1919. He made 30 appearances during the Bees' first season of league football in 1920–21, before leaving at the end of the campaign. Martha Cartmell
Martha Julia Cartmell (December 14, 1845; March 20, 1945) was a Canadian Methodist/United Church missionary and educator in Japan. She founded the Toyo Eiwa Jogakuin school in 1884 which now includes Toyo Eiwa University. Life The daughter of James Cartmell, a stone cutter, and his wife Sarah, she was born in Thorold and was educated in Hamilton and Toronto. Her mother died when she was five. Cartmell became a missionary and left San Francisco for Japan in 1882 and established a Christian school for girls, Toyo Eiwa Jogakuin, two years later in Roppongi. Cartmell was forced to resign due to poor health in 1887. She recovered in Canada, working at the General Mission in Victoria, British Columbia from 1890 to 1892, and returned to Tokyo. After four more years in Japan, she again returned to Canada in 1896 and worked with Japanese people at the General Mission in Victoria for two more years before retiring for good in 1898. Harry Cartmell
Sir Harry Cartmell (18 March 1857 – 11 May 1923) was an English solicitor who served as Mayor of Preston, from 1913 to 1919, during the whole period of the First World War. He was the author of ''For Remembrance'', published in 1919, which was a memoir of his experiences in Preston during the war. Cartmell was born in Manchester and admitted a solicitor in 1893, and was also a justice of the peace for Lancashire and chairman of Preston Education Committee. He was knighted in the 1920 New Year Honours for his services to Preston, especially as mayor throughout the First World War and to education in the borough.
