The Carroll's Number 1 Tournament was a professional 72-hole stroke play golf tournament played in the Republic of Ireland. It was inaugurated by sponsors Carroll's in 1965 as a means of providing more playing opportunities to Irish professionals, and a qualification route for the existing Carroll's International. Christy O'Connor Snr
Patrick Christopher "Christy" O'Connor (21 December 1924 – 14 May 2016) was an Irish professional golfer. He was one of the leading golfers on the British and Irish circuit from the mid-1950s. O'Connor won over 20 important British and Irish tournaments and finished in the top 10 in the Open Championship on 10 occasions. Later he had considerable success in seniors events, twice winning the World Senior Championship. In team events he played in 10 successive Ryder Cup matches and played in 15 Canada Cup/World Cup matches for Ireland, winning the Canada Cup in 1958 in partnership with Harry Bradshaw. P. J. Carroll & Company Limited, often called Carroll's, is an Irish manufacturing company of tobacco. Having been established in 1824, P.J. Carroll is the oldest tobacco manufacturer in the country, and currently a subsidiary of British American Tobacco. Its cigarette brands were among the best selling in Ireland in the twentieth century. Its factory was for decades the largest employer in Dundalk. History Patrick James Carroll (b. 1803) completed his apprenticeship as a tobacconist in 1824 and opened a shop in Dundalk, later also manufacturing cigars. He moved to Liverpool in England in the 1850s. His son Vincent Stannus Carroll expanded the firm in the later 19th century. His son James Marmion Carroll moved to a house outside Dundalk. Carroll's International
The Carroll's International was a professional golf tournament played in the Republic of Ireland from 1963 to 1974. It was part of the British PGA tournament circuit, which evolved into the European Tour, and as such is recognised as an official European Tour event from 1972. The tournament was founded by sponsors Carroll's in 1963, as a successor to the Irish Hospitals Tournament which had been held at Woodbrook Golf Club from 1958 to 1962. For the first two years, the Carroll's tournament was also played at Woodbrook and titled as the Carroll Sweet Afton tournament. It was played at Cork Golf Club in 1965 and The Royal Dublin Golf Club in 1966, before returning to Woodbrook where it remained until its final edition in 1974. Ballybunion Golf Club
The Ballybunion Golf Club is a golf club in County Kerry, Ireland. Founded in 1893, the club had barely opened its doors before experiencing financial problems. An investment from Colonel Bartholomew saved the club in 1906, and nine new holes were promptly laid out. By 1927 the course had been expanded to 18 holes. Considered one of the finest links courses in the world, Ballybunion's reputation grew over time. Unfortunately, its remote locale on the Irish southwest coast has prevented the course from being selected for many top championship events.
