Carrick Pursuivant
Carrick Pursuivant of Arms is a Scottish pursuivant of arms of the Court of the Lord Lyon. The title is derived from the Earldom of Carrick, one of the titles borne by Robert the Bruce before his succession to the crown. The arms of the Earldom are ''Argent, a chevron Gules'', hence the chevron in the pursuivant's badge. The earliest known reference to the office is from 1364. The badge is blazoned: ''A chevron Gules enfiled of a coronet of four fleurs-de-lys (two visible) and four crosses pattee (one and two halves visible) Or.'' A heraldic badge, emblem, impresa, device, or personal device worn as a badge indicates allegiance to, or the property of, an individual, family or corporate body. George Alexander Way of Plean, Baron of Plean in the County of Stirlingshire is a Scottish Sheriff and former Procurator Fiscal of the Court of the Lord Lyon in Scotland. In November 2015 it was announced that he was to be the first Scottish Sheriff to be appointed a member of the Royal Household in Scotland as Falkland Pursuivant Extraordinary at the Court of the Lord Lyon. Elizabeth Ann Roads, (née Bruce; born 1951) is a former Scottish herald, an office from which she retired in 2021; in July 2018 she retired as Lyon Clerk at the Court of the Lord Lyon Personal life and education Elizabeth Roads is the daughter of Lt Col. James Bruce MC and his wife Mary Hope Sinclair. She was born in 1951 and educated at Lansdowne House in Edinburgh, the Cambridgeshire College of Technology, the Study Centre for Fine Art in London, and Edinburgh Napier University (LLB with distinction). She married Christopher Roads in 1983, and they have two sons Timothy and William and a daughter Emily. John Spens
John Alexander Spens (7 June 1933 – 14 January 2021) was a Scottish lawyer and officer of arms. Spens was the son of Thomas Patrick Spens and Nancy Farie Anderson. He was educated at Rugby School, Corpus Christi College, Cambridge and the University of Glasgow. He was a partner of the legal firm Maclay, Murray and Spens, and a director of Scottish Amicable Life Assurance Society and Standard Property Investment Ltd. He was a commissioned officer in the Royal Naval Reserve, attaining the rank of lieutenant commander and being awarded the Decoration for Officers of the Royal Naval Reserve in 1970. Reid studied law at Trinity College, Cambridge and The Hague Academy of International Law. James Monteith Grant
Sir James Monteith Grant FRHSC (Hon) (19 October 1903 – 1 December 1981) was Lord Lyon King of Arms of Scotland from 1969 to 1981. Educated at the Edinburgh Academy and the University of Edinburgh, where he studied law, he was appointed a Writer to the Signet (WS) in 1927. His first heraldic appointment was as Carrick Pursuivant in 1946. He was promoted to Marchmont Herald in 1957 and then to Lord Lyon in 1969. He was also Secretary to the Order of the Thistle from 1971 until 1981. From his retirement as Lord Lyon in 1981, he again held the post of Marchmont Herald until his death later that year. He was a Fellow of the Society of Antiquaries of Scotland (FSA Scot), a Knight of the Venerable Order of St John (KStJ) from 1970, and a Commander 2nd Class of the Order of the Polar Star (KNO2kl) of Sweden from 1975.
