Carrapateena Airport is a private airport servicing the OZ Minerals Carrapateena mine in northern South Australia, east of Woomera. Construction of the airport was completed in July 2018. Carrapateena Mine
The Carrapateena mine is a large copper mine under development in South Australia's Far North region 100 km southeast of Olympic Dam and approximately 160km north of Port Augusta. Carrapateena represents one of the largest copper reserves in Australia and in the world having estimated reserves of 292 million tonnes of ore grading 1.31% copper and 3.64 million oz of gold. It was discovered by explorer and metallurgist Rudie Gomez in 2005. The project was acquired by OZ Minerals in 2011, and the project was referred to the EPBC Act for Federal environmental approval in 2012. Construction of the decline to access the mine commenced in 2016. The mining technique used to extract the ore is sub-level caving. The Tjati decline was officially opened in November 2016. Woomera, unofficially Woomera village, refers to the domestic area of RAAF Base Woomera. Woomera village has always been a Defence-owned and operated facility. Port Augusta Airport
Port Augusta Airport is an airport located west of Port Augusta, South Australia. Overview The airport serves as a gateway to the city of Port Augusta, as well as isolated mineral projects in the north of the state. Other operations include a base for the Royal Flying Doctor Service which maintains administrative, engineering and hangar facilities for the Pilatus PC-12 fleet at the airport. The majority of traffic at the airport are general aviation related movements, and the Port Augusta Aero Club is also located here. Fly-in fly-out is a method of employing people in remote areas by flying them temporarily to the work site instead of relocating employees and their families permanently. It is often abbreviated to FIFO when referring to employment status. This is common in large mining regions in Australia and Canada. Similar to the fly-in fly-out roster is the DIDO (drive-in drive-out) roster, which has essentially the same benefits and drawbacks.
