Carondelet Farm is a horse racing operation and breeding farm in Ramona, California near San Diego. The property was named after Carondelet Street in New Orleans. Carondelet Farm has raced and/or bred a number of Graded and Group Stakes Winners including Champion racehorse Artax who won the 1999 Breeders' Cup Sprint. History David Bernsen established Carondelet Farm in the early 1990s in Ramona, California near San Diego after purchasing the property from actor Jimmy Cagney. Carondelet Street is a major street in New Orleans. It is one-way eastbound. It starts at Robert Street in the Uptown,_New_Orleans, Uptown neighborhood and continues to Josephine Street. One must turn left at this point, and then right. Carondelet continues up to Canal Street, New Orleans, Canal Street. Crossing Canal Street, the name changes to Bourbon Street, which extends to Kerlerec Street just outside the French Quarter. The street was named for Spanish colonial governor Francisco Luis Héctor de Carondelet, whose administration was in the 1790s. Artax (horse)
Artax (1995–2012) was a champion American Thoroughbred racehorse who won the 1999 Breeders' Cup Sprint and was the 1999 American Champion Sprint Horse. He also won the Carter Handicap and Vosburgh Stakes and equaled or broke three track records. Artax was named after a horse featured in the children's fantasy novel ''The Neverending Story''. During the 1999 running of the Maryland Breeders' Cup, an inebriated man (Lee Chang Ferrell) walked under the rail at Pimlico Racecourse on Preakness Day and stood in front of the field. As Artax came by, he attempted to hit him and the horse moved over several paths, making contact with other horses and wrenching his ankle. Ferrell was not injured. All betting money on the horse, who was the 4/5 favorite, was refunded. Artax was retired to stud in 2000. Breeders' Cup Sprint
The Breeders' Cup Sprint is an American Weight for Age Grade I Thoroughbred horse race for horses three years old and older. Run on dirt Corrected grade for Santa Anita sprintover a distance of 6 Furlongs ( mile), the race has been held annually since 1984 at a different racetrack in the United States or Canada as part of the Breeders' Cup World Championships. Automatic Berths Beginning in 2007, the Breeders' Cup developed the Breeders' Cup Challenge, a series of races in each division that allotted automatic qualifying bids to winners of defined races. Each of the fourteen divisions has multiple qualifying races. Note though that one horse may win multiple challenge races, while other challenge winners will not be entered in the Breeders' Cup for a variety of reasons such as injury or travel considerations. The Del Mar Fairgrounds is a event venue in Del Mar, California. The annual San Diego County Fair is held here, which was called the Del Mar Fair from 1984 to 2001.
