Carolyn Jakobsen
Carolyn Anne Jakobsen (born 11 September 1947) is a former Australian politician. She served in the House of Representatives from 1984 to 1993, representing the Division of Cowan for the Australian Labor Party (ALP). Early life Jakobsen was born on 11 September 1947 in Auckland, New Zealand. She did not renounce her New Zealand citizenship until January 1990, following media attention given to the parliamentary eligibility requirements of section 44(i) of the constitution. Prior to entering parliament herself she worked as a political staffer. She was active in the Australian Labor Party (Western Australian Branch) and served as president of the ALP's Manning branch. Parliament Jakobsen was elected to the newly created Division of Cowan at the 1984 federal election. She was re-elected at the 1987 and 1990 elections before being defeated by the Liberal candidate Richard Evans at the 1993 election. Division Of Cowan
The Division of Cowan is an Australian Electoral Division in Western Australia. Cowan is an inner-northern Perth seat lying generally between Morley Drive and Hepburn Avenue, extending from the Mitchell Freeway in the west to the Tonkin Freeway and Lord Street in the east. Cowan is a marginal seat that leans toward the Australian Labor Party. The current MP is Anne Aly, and member of Labor and the first Muslim woman elected to federal parliament. She speaks Arabic and has previously worked in the Western Australia public service as a senior policy advisor. History The division was created in 1984 and is named for Edith Cowan, the first woman elected to an Australian Parliament. Australia was a member of the international coalition which contributed military forces to the 1991 Gulf War, also known as Operation Desert Storm. More than 1,800 Australian Defence Force (ADF) personnel were deployed to the Persian Gulf from August 1990 to September 1991, while contingents from the Royal Australian Navy circulated through the region in support of the sanctions against Iraq until November 2001. In August 1990, two frigates HMAS ''Adelaide'' and HMAS ''Darwin'' and the replenishment ship HMAS ''Success'' left for the Persian Gulf. HMAS ''Success'' had no air defences, so the Army 16th Air Defence Regiment was embarked. Swan River Trust
The Swan River Trust was a Western Australian state government statutory authority defined by the Swan and Canning Rivers Management Act 2006. The Trust reported to the Minister for Environment. It was preceded by the Swan River Management Authority (1977–1989) and earlier Swan River Conservation Board (1959–1976). It was established in 1989 to protect and manage the Swan and Canning rivers. The Trust had several community engagement programs that allowed the Perth community to be involved in caring for the Swan Canning Riverpark including River Guardians, the Dolphin Watch Project, and Ribbons of Blue.
