Virgin Music Label & Artist Services is a music distributor of independent artists and record labels, owned by Universal Music Group. The subsidiary focuses on the distribution of new or emerging partners. Started by Virgin Records as Caroline Distribution, a record importer, Virgin has become one of the U.S. music industry's largest third party distribution companies for the independent music sector. In 1993, when EMI acquired Virgin Records, Caroline was separated and became part of EMI Music Distribution. The company is currently part of Virgin Music Group. The digital music and network company INgrooves (including the independent label distributor Fontana Distribution) was acquired by Universal in 2019, with Fontana being folded into Virgin. Universal Music Group N.V. (often abbreviated as UMG and referred to as just Universal Music) is a Dutch– American multinational music corporation under Dutch law. It originally founded as a British independent record label in 1972 by entrepreneurs Richard Branson, Simon Draper, Nik Powell, and musician Tom Newman. Finders, keepers, sometimes extended as the children's rhyme finders, keepers; losers, weepers, is an English adage with the premise that when something is unowned or abandoned, whoever finds it first can claim it for themself permanently. The phrase relates to an ancient Roman law of similar meaning and has been expressed in various ways over the centuries.
