Caroline Bardua
Caroline Bardua (also Karoline Bardua; 11 November 1781 in Ballenstedt, Anhalt-Bernburg – 2 June 1864) was a German painter. She was one of the first middle-class women who was able to create an existence for herself as an independent artist. Life Caroline Bardua was the daughter of Johann Adam Bardua, the valet of Alexius Frederick Christian, Duke of Anhalt-Bernburg, and Sophie Sabine Kirchner. Her first art instruction came from 1805 to 1807 under Hans Heinrich Meyer in Weimar. In Weimar she was also an acquaintance of Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, whose portrait she drew. From 1808 to 1811 she, together with Louise Seidler, was a student of Gerhard von Kügelgen in Dresden. In his workshop she and other students produced copies of paintings. She also became acquainted with Anton Graff and the then unknown Caspar David Friedrich. The Union List of Artist Names (ULAN) is a free online database of the Getty Research Institute using a controlled vocabulary, which by 2018 contained over 300,000 artists and over 720,000 names for them, as well as other information about artists. Johanna Schopenhauer
Johanna Schopenhauer (née Trosiener; 9 July 1766 – 17 April 1838) was mother of the German philosopher Arthur Schopenhauer. She was the first German woman to publish books without a pseudonym, an influential literary salon host, and in the 1820s a popular author in Germany. Biography Johanna Schopenhauer was born in Danzig (''Gdańsk''), in the Crown of the Kingdom of Poland, to a family of middle-class merchants of Dutch extraction; her parents were Christian Heinrich and Elisabeth (b. Lehmann) Trosiener. Her father was also a councilor in the city. She was a precocious girl, sensitive to art and with great talent to learn foreign languages. Before turning 10, she already knew Polish, French, and English apart from her native German. Johanna Christiana Sophie Vulpius von Goethe (1 June 1765 – 6 June 1816) was the longtime lover and later wife of Johann Wolfgang von Goethe. Biography Vulpius spent her childhood in ''Luthergasse'', one of the oldest parts of Weimar. Her paternal ancestors had been academics for several generations. On her mother's side, she came from a family of artisans. Her father, Johann Friedrich Vulpius, who worked as an archivist (i.e., file copyist) in Weimar, had studied law for a few semesters but then dropped out of college. His position was poorly paid, and the family lived in difficult circumstances with six children. Her father sacrificed everything to enable his oldest son Christian August to pursue his education; he would grow up to become a writer of popular historical novels and plays.
