The Carolinas Open is a golf tournament played in the Carolinas, open to both amateur and professional golfers. It is run by the Carolinas section of the PGA of America. It has been played annually since 1923 at a variety of courses around both states. Golf
Golf is a club-and-ball sport in which players use various clubs to hit balls into a series of holes on a course in as few strokes as possible. Golf, unlike most ball games, cannot and does not use a standardized playing area, and coping with the varied terrains encountered on different courses is a key part of the game. Courses typically have either 18 or 9 ''holes'', regions of terrain that each contain a ''cup'', the hole that receives the ball. Each hole on a course contains a teeing ground to start from, and a putting green containing the cup. Tim Collins (golfer)
Clyde Ellett "Tim" Collins, Jr. (July 19, 1945 – April 17, 2012) was an American professional golfer. He earned All-America honors two years at Virginia Tech in the mid-1960s and went on to play professionally on the PGA Tour. He was a native of Christiansburg, Virginia. College career Collins was the first full scholarship player for Virginia Tech in 1964. At Tech, he played in the NCAA golf championship for three consecutive years (1965–1967). He earned third team All-America honors in 1965, and finished seventh at the NCAA tournament, leading the Hokie team to an 11th-place finish. He capped his career by finishing tied for fifth in the 1967 event, three strokes back of Hale Irwin (known then as a Colorado football star). He also earned All-America honors, this time as a second team selection. No Tech golfer had finished higher in the NCAA tournament through 2018. He finished 20th at the 1966 NCAA tournament. Neal Lancaster
Grady Neal Lancaster (born September 13, 1962) is an American professional golfer who has played on the PGA Tour, Nationwide Tour and the PGA Tour Champions. Lancaster was born, raised and makes his home in Smithfield, North Carolina. He turned pro in 1985 as a completely self-taught player. Lancaster started playing on mini-tours four months in 1989 before going to Q School. He did not take his first golf lesson until 1992. His first golf lesson was given by L.B. Floyd, father of Raymond Floyd. Lancaster has 28 top-10 finishes in 579 PGA Tour events, including a win at the 1994 GTE Byron Nelson Golf Classic, which was shortened to 36 holes due to weather. (Prior to 1996, PGA Tour events shortened to 36 holes were considered official.) His best finish in a major is a T-4 at the 1995 U.S. Open.
