Carolina Cup
The Carolina Cup is an annual steeplechase horse race held at the Springdale Race Course in Camden, South Carolina. The race holds the National Steeplechase Association attendance record of 71,000 people. The Carolina Cup has raised thousands of dollars for the local Kershaw County Medical Center. Each year the gates open at 9:00 AM, cadets from the prestigious Camden Military Academy present the colors at 11:45 AM, and the six races begin at 1:00 PM. Each race runs thirty-five minutes apart. General admission is thirty dollars in advance and forty-five dollars at the gates. Suggested attire is typically dresses and sunhats for women and bowties and sport coats for men. Races run regardless of bad weather. Camden is the largest city and county seat of Kershaw County, South Carolina. The population was 7,764 in the 2020 census. It is part of the Columbia, South Carolina, Metropolitan Statistical Area. National Steeplechase Association
The National Steeplechase Association is the official sanctioning body of American steeplechase horse racing. The National Steeplechase Association was founded on February 15, 1895 by August Belmont Jr., the first president of The Jockey Club and chairman of the New York State Racing Commission, along with Alexander Cassatt, John G. Follansbee, H. DeCourcy Forbes, Frederick Gebhard, James O. Green, Samuel S. Howland, Foxhall P. Keene, and Frederick H. Prince. The governing authority for the sport of steeplechase racing, their National Steeplechase Association held, promoted, and documented steeplechase races and events throughout the United States and granted licenses to its various participants. Camden Military Academy
Camden Military Academy (CMA) is a private, all-male, military boarding school located in Camden, South Carolina, United States. The State of South Carolina has recognized the institution as the official state military academy of South Carolina. Marion DuPont Scott
Marion duPont Scott (May 3, 1894 – September 4, 1983) was a thoroughbred horsebreeder who operated a racing stable for both flat and steeplechase racing. She was the last private owner of Montpelier, the mansion and land estate of former United States President James Madison. At the time of her death, she bequeathed Montpelier to the National Trust for Historic Preservation and established an endowment for its maintenance; it had been designated a National Historic Landmark. During the National Trust's major restoration of the mansion in 2003–2008 to its design during the time of Madison's residency, it reduced the house from the 55-room structure developed by the du Pont family back to its original 22 rooms.
