Carlton K. Mack, (July 30, 1911, Heshan, Guangdong – April 1995) born Mack Chuck Kwong, was a Chinese businessman who moved to Trinidad and Tobago at a young age where he built the J.T. Allum & Co. business into one of Trinidad and Tobago's largest enterprises. Heshan, Guangdong
Heshan () , formerly romanized as Hokshan, is a county-level city of Jiangmen City in the southern part of Guangdong Province, China with a total land area of and a population of 530,684 inhabitants as of 2020 census and some 200,000 internal migrants. The city is now being conurbated with Jiangmen and so included in the Guangzhou-Shenzhen Pearl River conurbation with more than 65,57 million inhabitants. There are approximately 360,000 people of Heshan origin or descent living in other parts of the world, particularly in the Americas such as Chile, Peru and the United States. Situated about south west of the provincial capital, Guangzhou, Heshan occupies a strategic location on the Pearl River Delta, commanding the northern gateway to Jiangmen's five prefectures. Chinese Trinidadian And Tobagonian
Chinese Trinidadians and Tobagonians (sometimes Sino-Trinidadians and Tobagonians or Chinese Trinbagonians) are Trinidadians and Tobagonians of Han Chinese ancestry. The group includes people from Mainland China, Hong Kong, and Overseas Chinese who have immigrated to Trinidad and Tobago and their descendants, including those who have emigrated to other countries. The term is usually applied both to people of mixed and unmixed Chinese ancestry, although the former usually appear as mixed race in census figures. Chinese settlement began in 1806. Between 1853 and 1866 2,645 Chinese immigrants arrived in Trinidad as indentured labour for the sugar and cacao plantations. Immigration peaked in the first half of the twentieth century, but was dramatically lowered after the Chinese Revolution in 1949. JTA Supermarkets Limited is a chain of five supermarkets in Trinidad and Tobago. History JTA Supermarkets began as J. T. Allum and Company Limited, a dry goods store at 100 High Street, San Fernando which was established in 1943. The store was owned by John Thomas Allum and managed by Carlton K. Mack, a distant relative of Allum who had immigrated to Trinidad and Tobago from China. In 1955 Mack entered an arrangement to purchase the company from the Allum family over the course of ten years. Eric Allum Poon remained chairman until his death in 1961. Mack became the chairman in 1961. In 1948 the company opened its first supermarket, in Couva followed by its second at Allum’s Shopping Centre in Marabella. In 1964 a third supermarket was opened in Carlton Centre, San Fernando, which was then the country's largest shopping mall.
