Carlos Végh Garzón
Carlos Vegh Garzón (Montevideo, 1902–1984) was a Uruguayan politician. Background He was a prominent member of the Uruguayan Colorado Party. Public offices He served as Minister of Economy and Finance in 1967, under President Oscar Gestido. A year later, he was President of the Banco de la República Oriental del Uruguay. Personal Son of Alejandro Végh and Sofia Garzon. His grandfather Sándor Végh was a Hungarian military officer who migrated to Uruguay in the mid-19th century. Married to Sofia Villegas Suárez (a great-granddaughter of President Joaquín Suárez). Had six children, including Alejandro Vegh Villegas, who was Minister of the Economy in 1974-1976 and again in 1982–1983. His grandson, Carlos A. Vegh, is an academic economist. Montevideo
Montevideo () is the Capital city, capital and List of cities in Uruguay, largest city of Uruguay. According to the 2011 census, the city proper has a population of 1,319,108 (about one-third of the country's total population) in an area of . Montevideo is situated on the southern coast of the country, on the northeastern bank of the Río de la Plata. The president exercises executive power and legislative power and is vested in the two chambers of the General Assembly of Uruguay. The Judiciary is independent from the executive and legislature. The Colorado and National parties have been locked in a power struggle, with the predominance of the Colorado party throughout most of Uruguay's history. The 2004 election, however, brought the Encuentro Progresista-Frente Amplio-Nueva Mayoría, a coalition of socialists, former Tupamaros, communists, social democrats, and Christian Democrats among others to power with majorities in both houses of parliament. Joaquín Suárez
Joaquín Luis Miguel Suárez de Rondelo (August 18, 1781 in Canelones – December 26, 1868 in Montevideo) was a Uruguayan political figure. Head of State of Uruguay In December 1828, Suárez served as the first head of state of the territory that was about to be known as Uruguay two years later. President of Uruguay He served as the President of the Senate of Uruguay from 1841 to 1845. Suárez served in the office designated as President of Uruguay from 1843 to 1852, during the Uruguayan Civil War. However, his effective rule was limited to the old city of Montevideo; historians remember this rule as "Gobierno de la Defensa" (Defense Government), as he was defending the city during the Great Siege of Montevideo, which in turn was led by Manuel Oribe, who ruled over the rest of the country.
