Carlos Mayans (born July 8, 1948) became mayor of the city of Wichita, Kansas in April 2003. He was born in Havana, Cuba in 1948 and emigrated to the United States through the Operation Peter Pan shortly after the Cuban Revolution of 1959. Carl Brewer (politician)
Carl Brewer (March 8, 1957June 12, 2020) was an American politician who served as the 100th mayor of Wichita, Kansas, and was the city's first elected black mayor. He was elected to the mayoralty in 2007 and reelected in 2011. He was a member of the Democratic Party and ran for the party's gubernatorial nomination in 2018. Early life and education Carl Brewer was born on March 8, 1957, in Wichita, Kansas. In 1975, he graduated from North High School and briefly attended Friends University. He earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in criminal justice from Southern University. From 1977 to 1998, he served in the Kansas Army National Guard and retired as a captain. Mario Goico (born July 24, 1945) is a former Republican member of the Kansas House of Representatives who represented Wichita, Kansas. Goico represented the 100th district from 2003 to 2013, and the 94th district from 2013 to 2017. Goico was first elected in 2002 but did not run for reelection in 2016. Cuban Revolution
The Cuban Revolution ( es, Revolución Cubana) was carried out after the 1952 Cuban coup d'état which placed Fulgencio Batista as head of state and the failed mass strike in opposition that followed. After failing to contest Batista in court, Fidel Castro organized an armed attack on the Cuban military's Moncada Barracks. The rebels were arrested and while in prison formed the 26th of July Movement. After gaining amnesty the M-26-7 rebels organized an expedition from Mexico on the Granma yacht to invade Cuba. In the following years the M-26-7 rebel army would slowly defeat the Cuban army in the countryside, while its urban wing would engage in sabotage and rebel army recruitment.
