Carlos Augusto León
Carlos Augusto León Arocha (Caracas, October 20, 1914 – May 13, 1997) was a Venezuelan poet, essayist, historian, politician and scientist. He gained a doctorate degree in physical science and mathematics from the Central University of Venezuela in 1936. He also gained a teaching degree in history and geography from the National Pedagogical Institute, and taught for over 5 years at the Andrés Bello Lyceum School in Caracas. In the last twenty years of his employed life he worked as a professor of contemporary literature at the Central University of Venezuela, an institution in which he also served as director of the Department of Publications. In the second half of his life Augusto Leon was preoccupied with writing poetry and being outspoken in politics, particularly in defense of the common people and disadvantaged social groups. An academy ( Attic Greek: Ἀκαδήμεια; Koine Greek Ἀκαδημία) is an institution of secondary or tertiary higher learning (and generally also research or honorary membership). The name traces back to Plato's school of philosophy, founded approximately 385 BC at Akademia, a sanctuary of Athena, the goddess of wisdom and skill, north of Athens, Greece. Etymology The word comes from the ''Academy'' in ancient Greece, which derives from the Athenian hero, '' Akademos''. Outside the city walls of Athens, the gymnasium was made famous by Plato as a center of learning. Caracas (, ), officially Santiago de León de Caracas, abbreviated as CCS, is the capital and largest city of Venezuela, and the center of the Metropolitan Region of Caracas (or Greater Caracas). Caracas is located along the Guaire River in the northern part of the country, within the Caracas Valley of the Venezuelan coastal mountain range (Cordillera de la Costa). The valley is close to the Caribbean Sea, separated from the coast by a steep 2,200-meter-high (7,200 ft) mountain range, Cerro El Ávila; to the south there are more hills and mountains.
