Carlos Aboim Inglez
Carlos Hahnemann Saavedra Aboim Inglez (January 5, 1930 – February 13, 2002) was a Portuguese communist intellectual, militant and leader of the Portuguese Communist Party (PCP), entering the party in 1946 (at age 16). He was the son of Maria Isabel Aboim Inglez and Carlos Aboim Inglez, both communists and anti-fascists. His wife was Maria Adelaide Aboim Inglez, who was also a communist militant who lived clandestinely with her husband. In 1953, he was made an official of the PCP. He was sentenced to eight years in Caxias prison by the '' Estado Novo'' regime. He showed great interest in Portuguese poetry, most notably through his inclusion of commentaries and notes on poetry in the communist newspaper ''Avante!''. He was interested in the relations between materialistic thought and the medieval controversy between realism and nominalism. Avante!
''Avante!'' (''Onwards!'') is the official newspaper of the Portuguese Communist Party (PCP). Founded in 1931, it continues to be published to this day. The newspaper's motto is ''Workers of the World, Unite!'' and has been present in every edition of the newspaper since the very first. Its headquarters is in Lisbon. The newspaper started to be an irregular publication due to the constant repression against the Portuguese Communist Party led by the authorities, who consistently assaulted the clandestine printing offices. After a major regorganization in 1940, the Party was able to make Avante! a better distributed newspaper among the working class, reporting events such as World War II or the Colonial War without censorship. After the Carnation Revolution, Avante! had a major role among the working class, supporting the revolutionary changes. Giuseppe Verdi
Giuseppe Fortunino Francesco Verdi (; 9 or 10 October 1813 – 27 January 1901) was an Italian composer best known for his operas. He was born near Busseto to a provincial family of moderate means, receiving a musical education with the help of a local patron. Verdi came to dominate the Italian opera scene after the era of Gioachino Rossini, Gaetano Donizetti, and Vincenzo Bellini, whose works significantly influenced him. In his early operas, Verdi demonstrated a sympathy with the Risorgimento movement which sought the unification of Italy. He also participated briefly as an elected politician. The chorus "Va, pensiero" from his early opera ''Nabucco'' (1842), and similar choruses in later operas, were much in the spirit of the unification movement, and the composer himself became esteemed as a representative of these ideals. Nabucco
''Nabucco'' (, short for Nabucodonosor ; en, " Nebuchadnezzar") is an Italian-language opera in four acts composed in 1841 by Giuseppe Verdi to an Italian libretto by Temistocle Solera. The libretto is based on the biblical books of 2 Kings, Jeremiah, Lamentations and Daniel and the 1836 play by Auguste Anicet-Bourgeois and Francis Cornu. However, Antonio Cortese's ballet adaptation of the play (with its necessary simplifications), given at La Scala in 1836, was a more important source for Solera than the play itself. Under its original name of ''Nabucodonosor'', the opera was first performed at La Scala in Milan on 9 March 1842. Nominalism
In metaphysics, nominalism is the view that universals and abstract objects do not actually exist other than being merely names or labels. There are at least two main versions of nominalism. One version denies the existence of universalsthings that can be instantiated or exemplified by many particular things (e.g., strength, humanity). Philosophical realism is usually not treated as a position of its own but as a stance towards other subject matters.
