Carlisle
Carlisle ( , ; from xcb, Caer Luel) is a city that lies within the Northern England, Northern English county of Cumbria, south of the Anglo-Scottish border, Scottish border at the confluence of the rivers River Eden, Cumbria, Eden, River Caldew, Caldew and River Petteril, Petteril. It is the administrative centre of the City of Carlisle district which, (along with Cumbria County Council) will be replaced by Cumberland (district), Cumberland Council in April 2023. The city became an established settlement during the Roman Empire to serve forts on Hadrian's Wall. During the Middle Ages, the city was an important military stronghold due to its proximity to the Kingdom of Scotland. Sir Kenneth Melville Carlisle (born 25 March 1941) is a politician in the United Kingdom. He was the Conservative Member of Parliament for Lincoln from 1979 to 1997. Early life Born in Hiraethog, Denbighshire, Wales, he is the son of Kenneth Ralph Malcolm Peter Carlisle and Elizabeth Mary McLaren. His father was a Director then Chairman of Liebig Extract of Meat Company which owned the brands of Oxo and Fray Bentos. The company was bought by Brooke Bond in 1970 and Unilever in 1984, and Kenneth Carlisle later worked at the company for eight years from 1966 to 1974. He was educated at Harrow School and Magdalen College, Oxford, where he gained a BA in Law. He became a barrister at the Inner Temple in 1965. In 1974, he took over running of an arable farm on his father's Wyken estate near Stanton in Suffolk. Stuart Vance Carlisle (born 10 May 1972) is a former Zimbabwean cricketer who played 37 Test matches and 111 One Day Internationals for Zimbabwe. He was captained the side briefly, leading them in six Tests and 12 ODIs, and achieving a 2–3 result in an ODI series in India. He has the unique distinction of being the only Zimbabwean player to have scored both ODI and test century against Australia. Phyllis Cook Carlisle (1912 - 1954) née ''Phyllis Willson Cook'' was a Canadian architect. Biography Cook was born in Toronto in 1912. She attended the University of Toronto and graduated with honors in 1935 earning a B.Arch. While at university she became the first woman to win the annual student design competition by the Royal Architectural Institute of Canada (RAIC). In 1934, that design for ''An Embassy in the Capital City of a Country in the Temperate Zon'' was published in the RAIC Journal. Additional awards won during her school years included the Toronto Brick Company Award, Architectural Guild Bronze Medal, and the Darling and Pearson prize. Peter Benson Carlisle (born October 12, 1952) is an American politician and attorney who served as the 13th Mayor of Honolulu, Hawaii from 2010 to 2013. Prior to serving as interim Mayor following the resignation of former Honolulu Mayor Mufi Hannemann (in Hannemann's unsuccessful bid to run for Hawaii State governor against former U.S. Representative Neil Abercrombie), Carlisle had served as the Prosecuting Attorney of Honolulu from 1996 to 2010. Orville H. Carlisle (July 5, 1917 – August 1, 1988), a shoe salesman in Norfolk, Nebraska invented the hobby that would become known as model rocketry. In 1953, Orville and his brother were joint owners of a shoe store on 420 Norfolk Ave. Robert, a model aviation enthusiast, demonstrated his "U-control" planes for groups in parks and schools in and around Norfolk, to demonstrate advances in aeronautical technology since World War II. He wanted a model missile for use in his demonstrations, to illustrate rocketry technology (which would, in a few years, lead to the beginning of the Space Age). He called on Orville, whose hobby was pyrotechnics, to build him a rocket. By 1954, Orville had developed his first rocket, the Rock-A-Chute Mark I. Sir John Michael Carlisle (born 16 December 1929) is a British marine engineer. Early life and education Carlisle was born in Sheffield, the son of John Hugh Carlisle and Lilian Amy Smith. Mary Jane Goodson Carlisle (, Goodson; August 28, 1835 – August 4, 1905) was a social leader from Kentucky. As the wife of politician John G. Carlisle, who served as speaker of the House, secretary of the Treasury, and as U.S. senator from Kentucky, Mary Jane Carlisle was prominent in Washington, D.C. social circles for many years. She was the lead author of ''Mrs. John G. Carlisle's Kentucky Cook Book,'' published in 1893. She died in 1905. Mary Carlisle (born Gwendolyn Witter; February 3, 1914 – August 1, 2018) was an American actress, singer, and dancer, best known for her roles as a wholesome ingénue in numerous 1930s Musical film, musical-comedy films. Mark Carlisle, Baron Carlisle of Bucklow, QC, DL, PC (7 July 1929 – 14 July 2005) was a British Conservative Party politician and was Member of Parliament (MP) for Runcorn from 1964 to 1983 and then for Warrington South until 1987.
